There are hundreds of makeup brushes on the market that make promises that they are easy to use, will give amazing results and are worth the money you spend on them. Working in fashion has given me exposure to many brands that I have tried myself. Though sometimes I am underwhelmed by brushes, I have come to depend and rely on my favorites to help me look beautiful. Here are my top 10 makeup brushes that will help you feel flawless and make the most of your makeup routine.
10. Eco Tools Tapered Blush Brush
Blush is my favorite product to wear and this Eco Tools Tapered Blush Brush makes applying it a breeze. I prefer to use this brush with powder blush, but you could also make it work with cream blush. Swirl your brush in your selected product and add to the apples of your cheeks lightly or along the cheekbone. This brush is affordable and doesn’t have the problem of splitting hairs that inexpensive brushes usually suffer from. The brush is very soft and fluffy, so I feel the color gets evenly applied even when I’m in a hurry, and I never feel like I am wearing too much blush.
9. Sephora Pro Buffing Brush #62
I knew I had to try Sephora’s Pro Buffing Brush #62 when I saw a friend with flawless contouring. Contouring can be pretty tricky but this brush takes out all the guess work. Get a good bronzer palette and load the brush with product. You’ll want to apply bronzer according to your face shape. Most people need to apply just under the cheek bone, along the jaw and a little on the forehead to elongate the face. I use this brush when I want to fake a sun kissed tan but don’t want to damage my skin with UV rays.
8. Smashbox Precision Concealer Brush #5
The Smashbox Precision Concealer Brush #5 is a great brush for applying cream or liquid concealer on top of any blemish or discoloration. The best feature is the shape of the brush, which lets me get into tiny spots on my face and cover even the smallest imperfection. I used to struggle with blending concealer in the past, but this brush has made even my concealer have an air brushed look. Add cream or liquid concealer to the synthetic bristles and buff onto skin until blended. Concealer is a good option on days when you don’t want to wear foundation but need a little coverage and this brush can help you keep it looking flawless.
7. Japonesque Angled Eyeliner Brush
I prefer using cream eyeliner, so I turn to the Japonesque Angled Eyeliner Brush for clean, bold lines. Winged eyeliner is a cinch because of the nylon bristles and angled tip, and it allows me to apply either a thin or thick line without smudging or getting it all over my eyelid. If you use liquid, cream or gel eyeliner, this brush will work great for application. Dip the brush in your product and sweep carefully across your eyelid. If you use an eyeliner pencil or cream pencil, apply as usual then blend out the color using this brush for a smokey effect. Its small size means I can toss it in my purse and use it for touch ups at work, so I never need to worry about messing up my eyeliner.
6. Real Techniques Powder Brush
The Real Techniques Powder Brush is my favorite for days when I’m using a mineral powder foundation. The synthetic taklon bristles are fluffy and don’t pick up too much extra powder, so I find that I don’t have to tap excess off much. This brush is inexpensive but I have found that I has really stood up to frequent use. To use the brush, dip it into your powder and swirl lightly, tapping whatever extra is on the brush off. Swirl the brush across your face until you have total coverage and you’re ready to go. This brush provides flawless coverage and I have recommended it to many friends.
5. Maybelline Lip Brush
The Maybelline Lip Brush is made from all natural bristles and is the easiest way to apply any lip color. I love wearing lipstick, but applying straight from the tube means I always make a mess. Just swipe the natural bristle brush along the lip color and start from the center of your lips. As you work your way outward you can fill in lips completely. You can still use a lip liner because the brush bristles will not wick it onto your face. I like to do two coats of lipstick or gloss to make sure I have enough applied. My favorite feature of the brush is that its totally retractable so I can keep it in my purse for on the go touch ups.
4. MAC 217 Blending Brush
For when you absolutely have to have flawless eyeshadow, try the MAC 217 Blending Brush. The bristles are soft, flexible and are oval in shape. The bristles are also very fine so they allow for very smooth blending of color. It can be hard to get color to blend when you layer it on in your crease, outer V and brow bone, but this brush makes it quick and minimizes any makeup fall out on your face. I like using this almost every day for perfecting my eye look. Just apply each color you want to use on your eye, from the lid and crease to brow and outer v. Use the brush to blend the colors together to get rid of any harsh lines. Even on a “bad skin day,” having a flawless eye will help you feel confident.
3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Mini Duo Brush #7
Anastasia Beverly Hills prides itself on brows, so when I bought their Mini Brush Duo #7 I was not surprised that the quality was amazing. The brush is small, so I can toss it in my bag when needed but it also doesn’t take up much room in my beauty bag at home either. One end is a natural sable brush perfect for applying product and reshaping your brows, and a spooley brush that you can use to add product that is gel or cream to the brow. Grab your favorite brow powder or even eyeshadow close to your hair color and swipe it on, and perfect with the spooley end. Groomed eyebrows are the perfect finish to any look.
2. Urban Decay Good Karma Finishing Brush
The Urban Decay Good Karma Finishing Brush is perfect for when you’re using an HD powder or other perfecting powder. The brush is incredibly soft, pliable and glides across the skin. The brush is animal friendly so if that’s important to you, check out all of Urban Decay’s Good Karma line for more vegan brushes. I like that this brush is pliable but is very tough and I know will last me a few years. Swirl your powder on your brush and sweep across your face until blended. HD powders can help make makeup last for hours, so you need a good brush like this one to make sure its applied correctly.
1. Sigma F80 Kabuki Brush
The Sigma F80 Kabuki Brush is my absolute favorite brush and one I use to apply my liquid foundation. The flat, densely packed synthetic bristles help blend the product out to an incredible finish. I even use it underneath foundation to buff out my concealer when I have a major breakout that is too big of a job with my concealer brush. The bristles are non irritating so I don’t find that my sensitive skin is bothered by the brush strokes. Simply dot your product across your face and start swirling the brush in circular motions. The brush will blend it effortlessly and leave you looking airbrushed and feeling confident.
Keeping your brushes clean is key to the brushes staying usable and keeping bacteria from developing on the bristles. A good brush cleaner can really help you maintain your brushes and save you a lot of headaches of having to throw away a good brush. One time, I had to throw away an expensive concealer brush that I forgot to clean and it ruined the bristles. Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner is my go to product to clean my brushes. Spritz each brush after use, wipe with a clean cloth and let dry. Once a week I use a mixture of water and baby shampoo to clean each brush thoroughly. Gently clean only the bristles, not the brush handle, and reshape with your fingers. Allow them to dry laying flat or upside down. With a little care, your brushes will last a very long time.
No matter what brand or type of makeup you wear, the right tools can help you look and feel beautiful. Choosing a variety of brush types and brands can help you build your own collection piece by piece until you have everything you need. With a little practice, you’ll have your makeup routine down to a science and always feel confident in your makeup looks.
