“The Craigslist Killer” is a Made-for-TV psychological thriller based on the true story of Philip Markoff, a medical student at Boston University who is at the top of his class. Philip has everything going for him when he meets beautiful Megan McAllister, who also aspires to go to medical school and who falls deeply in love with Philip. Philip does not have the upper-class credentials that Megan has, and struggles to put himself through medical school.
The city of Boston is faced with fear when a number of brutal killings of women take place. The women are all prostitutes who have advertised their services on Craigslist. The viewer is aware from the beginning that Philip is the perpetrator, and witnesses his attacks on two of the women. One of his victims was able to provide the police with details of his sadistic attempts to make his victim suffer.
Everything about Philip would not connect him with such a terrible deed as murder. He was well-liked by his teachers and peers, was a brilliant student engaged to a beautiful girl, and was already making plans for their wedding. Surveillance videos of one of the victim’s apartment building led the police finally to Philip.
Megan and Philip had moved into an apartment together, and several discrepancies started coming to light. Megan had been blind to the fact that her fiancée was less than perfect. She saw no fault in him. When he came home late, she accepted that he had been at the library or the lab working. When their common credit card was denied, she was startled but accepted the fact that Philip was busy and had not deposited on time a grant check he had received. Even after Philip was arrested, she insisted that the police had the wrong man; she stated that he was a “beautiful person,” and “wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
Only one cast member is a well-known actor. William Baldwin, one of the Baldwin brothers, played the part of Detective Bennett, who tracked down Philip, even though he suffered abuse aimed at the Boston Police Department for their ineptitude. The characters who played Philip and Megan did an excellent and believable job.
This review will not reveal the ending. Suffice it to say that the film was thoroughly enjoyable although it received mixed reviews. I applaud the producers for not showing erotic scenes in order to increase the number of viewers.
