“Lakeview Terrace” has a unique twist on racism. In this film an interracial couple moves into a middle class subdivision next door to an LA police department officer who hates either the idea of interracial couples, interracial marriage or this interracial couple solely. Either way, he has it in for them from the onset. Tormenting them from the beginning, their lives are almost a living nightmare from the minute he realizes the wife is African American and the husband is Caucasian.
Samuel L Jackson plays the part of LAPD officer Abel Turner to perfection. He attempts almost everything to get the couple Chris Mattson played by Patrick Wilson and Lisa Mattson played by Kerry Washington to move completely out of the subdivision.
Abel Turner makes it obvious he does not believe in interracial marriages and wants them to leave the neighborhood in addition to not even have an interaction with his children. He makes this well-known after Lisa invites the kids to a get together at her home and only Abel shows up.
Abel also lets Chris know he and the children saw the performance he and his wife shared in their pool the night before which did nothing to ease the already mounting tension.
Abel’s relentless quest to get Chris and Lisa out of the neighborhood does not end until Abel solicits the help of a convicted thug. He gets the guy to break into the home of Chris and Lisa. His intent is for the thug to just do a bit of damage. Abel however never plans for Lisa to return. In the interim, Lisa catches the guy in the midst of the break-in, is hurt. She however enables the alarm. Chris and Abel respond. When Abel arrives, he shoots and kills the intruder.
Lisa is taken to the hospital where she is found to be okay. However when returning home, a fire has broken out and is threatening the homes in the subdivision. Everyone is required to evacuate. Abel however is watering down his home in an attempt to prevent it from being destroyed. During an exchange between the three, it is discovered that Abel is the one who solicited the intruder to break into Lisa and Chris’s home.
When this is discovered, an altercation ensues and Abel tries to prevent Chris and Lisa from informing the police of his part in the break in and murder of the intruder. During an exchange of shots, Abel is killed.
“Lakeview Terrace” is a good movie to place on your must see list. The exchanges, suspense and performance of Jackson keep you on the edge of your seat.
Ron Glass of Barney Miller fame makes a few appearances as Lisa’s father who also opposes her interracial marriage.
