I love to go camping, whether my friends and myself go by bicycles, trucks, SUV’s, vans, horses or motorcycles. We also hike into an area carrying our own tents. It’s a lot of fun to travel and camp different ways.
Several of my friends who have motorcycles often load their bikes with bags and gear stuffed into compression bags. Recently, a few began carrying brochures about tent trailers made for motorcycles. The concept is wonderful; a compact trailer that when opened, folds into a tent. Many offer storage space, allowing users to carry ice chests or other gear.
Manufacturers may offer accessories such as awnings, extra room additions, solar panels, kitchens and more.
Before purchasing a trailer, motorcycle owners should check with their bike’s manufacturer and learn whether a trailer can be pulled or not. This is not just a matter of money, it is a matter of safety.
One great advantage of pulling a camper tent trailer is being able to stay at campgrounds instead of shelling out money for hotel rooms while traveling.
Excel Tent Trailer For Motorcycles
The trailer measures a mere 4.5′ wide by 5.5′ long, but opens up to a generous tent that boasts a 6’4″ tall ceiling and a bed length of 6’9.” The manufacturer offers a wide variety of accessories, including awnings, extra room, ice chest rack, storage box, air conditioner bracket kit and much more. Various hitches for different motorcycle brands are available as well.
In the off-season, the trailer stores on its end, allowing more space in the garage or storage unit.
Mini Mate Motorcycle Camper
It almost seems impossible that the miniscule trailer could possibly convert to a tent that allows a person to sleep comfortably, but it does. Open Road Outfitters offers other trailers such as the Easy Camper, the Time Out and the Time Out Deluxe.
Evopod
The Evopod is stylish when closed, aerodynamic on the road and houses storage, a queen-sized bed and sturdy tent for camping. Accessories include an annex that can double as a kitchen, extra room or studio.
These can also be pulled by small cars, including the Smart Car with ease. Developed in Australia, it could be available in the US soon.
Go Easy
Sylvan Sport has created one of the most unique camper trailers ever. In fact, National Geographic Adventure has called it “the coolest camper ever. The Go model is lightweight enough to be pulled by motorcycles. The tent is carried in the lid, and the frame rises via a hand crank; it is strong enough to store kayaks and bicycles on the roof of the tent. The tent comes with an awning and two beds on the sides.
Sharing my research with my friends didn’t garner any laughs, but several people calling manufacturers to find out if their bikes could pull these trailers. Various models of bikes can pull trailers including:
- · Honda
- · Goldwing
- · Harley Davidson
- · Suzuki
- · Kawasaki
It is important to stay under the weight rating that each bike can tow for safety and to reduce wear and tear on the engine.
Camping with my motorcycle friends is going to be more comfortable in the future. That’s if the tents aren’t loaded with additional gear that traditionally gets left behind. I’ll drive and pull my own.
