In a world that is becoming increasingly selfish, people will still come together for a common goal and help support a complete stranger. When that complete stranger turns out to be a Columbus, Ohio native and former Ohio State football player, you get the story of Mekka Don and his respectable hustle to release a debut album.
After finishing college at The Ohio State University, going to law school in New York and becoming a successful lawyer, Mekka Don (born Chukwuemeka Onyejekwe) found his soul wanting something different, something creative. A journey uniquely his own began the second he decided to step away from being a lawyer to become a rapper. He’s had continued success since his 2006 decision to pursue a music career, but his involvement and licensing efforts with The Ohio State University, ESPN and Big Ten Network greatly expanded his audience and made his voice ubiquitous with college football. Mekka has carved his own niche and paved the way for his own success.
It should be no surprise that being from Columbus, Ohio means growing up with Buckeye sports; Ohio State has one of the best fan bases in college football and the numbers keep growing. Capitalizing on a large community like this, especially one you’re a part of, is a surefire way to get the backing you need for a project like releasing your very own rap album.
When a community surrounds and supports you and your dreams, they can only get bigger; this is exactly what happened when Mekka Don decided to crowdfund his debut album, “The Dream Goes On”. With the original goal of raising $12,500 in 35 days, supporters helped surpass his intent and raised over $21,000 using the site IndieGoGo.
Since his album released on iTunes and Amazon, on March 4th, he’s stayed busy with video shoots, international travel, and promoting the album. The video for “Rockstar” will be released soon, and there are talks of touring in the future.
Never too good to forget where he started, he continues to be involved with The Ohio State University football and basketball programs, Columbus Crew soccer, and visits Central Ohio schools to talk to kids about how important an education is while still chasing your dream. He’s currently preparing for football season with a new music video and new apparel for his Ohio State football anthem “JUICE”.
In addition to growing his empire, he is incredibly down to Earth and loves interacting with those exact people who helped him along the way – the fans, the people. Mekka Don’s number one message to his fans is, “Follow your heart but use your brain. Passion over pension.”
