The popularity of Lupita Nyong’o has inspired new discussions about dark skinned beauty. These discussions resurface every time a dark skinned Black person is acknowledged for their beauty. In the case of Lupita Nyong’o , an actress who is celebrated for her skill as an actress in the mainstream is just as celebrated for her beauty in the Black community.
The truth of the matter is that the old “light skinned” aesthetic has not been that big of a deal in the mainstream for a while. One should also keep in mind that the whole light skin/dark skin debate also exists in other cultures. Personally I feel that the mainstream is ready for something different.
The Caucasian women that are celebrated in the mainstream used to be light, pale, with blonde hair. But we haven’t really seen this since the nineties. Most Caucasian celebrities appear tanned, brunette, with a physique that is more in line with what you expect from a woman of color. None of the Indian celebrities are light. Ms. America, an Indian, is not that light.
At the end of the day our obsession with light skin is just that, a predilection that the media has fed to African Americans that continues to perpetrate on it’s own volition.
So why are we still having this conversation? Just last year, on the BET show Being Mary Jane, Mary Jane was speaking to her ignorant niece, who felt her child would be beautiful because the child was half Filipino. Nothing against Filipinos, but that is no guarantee of anything.
Are we still hooking up with other races to have beautiful children? Nothing against the children, but a lot of them are not attractive. Some are, but no more than any other children, Black or White. We have internalized this notion that other races are more attractive than Blacks, when that simply is not the case. When mixed kids ate attractive it is usually because one or both of the parents are attractive. An attractive Black person can hook up with an unattractive person of a different race and have beautiful mixed children. If you feel you’re ugly, what you are really saying is that your partner is attractive and that is why the kids are good looking. And if you’re saying this because you’re dark skinned there are some serious self esteem issues you need to work out.
We should not be surprised about Lupita Nyong’o . Caucasians have found dark skin to be exotic and sexy for several years, at least since the seventies. But why is it that we do not share that same belief ourselves? Because the few Caucasians that are into dark skin do not speak openly on the subject? Well they’re not in a position of power, and the media won’t give them the platform they need to do so.
