Low Sodium Options Golden Corral Breakfast Buffet
I suffer from high blood pressure. But I don’t want to give up my favorite restaurant breakfasts. Golden Corral’s weekend breakfast buffet is a treat my family looks forward to. Below is a review of the low sodium options Golden Corral’s breakfast buffet.
The Mayo Clinic recommends people at risk for heart attacks, high blood pressure, swelling, and strokes consume less than 1,500 mg of salt per day. That’s an average of 500 mg per meal.
Because breads and cheeses are high in sodium, it is often hard to find healthy low sodium breakfast options when eating out at fast food restaurants like Taco Bell and Hardees. So I was very pleased to discover that Golden Corral’s breakfast buffet offers a multitude of low sodium options.
Start with one Plain or Blueberry Pancake and top liberally with Homemade Strawberry Jam, Maple Syrup, Strawberry Fruit Topping or Whipped Cream for a total sodium count of 15 mg. Compare that to Bob Evan’s pancakes. Bob Evan’s Fruit N Nut Multigrain pancakes contain 1,243 mg of salt. Double Blueberry, Double Chocolate, and Cinnamon Supreme all contain 1,800 mg of sodium, 300 mg more than you should consume in an entire day.
Even the kids Plenty-O-Pancakes contain 1,280 mg of salt, before adding the 100 mg in each side of syrup!
At Golden Corral, you can add 2 Tbsp Cherry, Pineapple, or Apple Fruit Topping for less than 55 mg of sodium. Two Tbsp Sugar Free Pancake Syrup only contains 55 mg and Whipped Margarine 75 mg of sodium. Even the higher sodium French Toast (190 mg) and Waffle (260 mg) are still in range and a much healthier option than many other restaurants.
Golden Corral offers low sodium sweet treats as well. One Strawberry Crepe contains only 85 mg of sodium. Or choose a Cherry or Apple Turnover or Cherry Crepe for 100 mg. One Homemade Honeybun contains 190 mg of sodium. One can even enjoy one Mini Cin-a-Gold Roll (210 mg), one piece of Banana Nut Bread (230 mg), or one slice Banana Nut French Toast (270 mg). Compare to Panera Bread’s bakery where a Triple Berry scone contains 550 mg of salt and an Orange scone contains 810 mg of sodium.
What to Avoid
While the Spinach Quiche (480 mg) and Sausage Pizza (500 mg) just made the sodium cut, avoid the Breakfast Pizza and the Bacon and Cheese Quiche which contain 660 and 730 mg of sodium, respectively.
Avoid even ½ cup of the Hash Brown Casserole, Creamed Chipped Beef, and White Hominy. These dishes start at 530 mg of salt and climb over 750 mg. Grilled Corned Beef Hash tops off the list with 810 mg of salt.
Beware of the different sodium levels in the different types of bacon. Three pieces of bacon contain a moderate 170 mg of salt. However, one piece less of the Breakfast bacon contains 20 more mg of salt. Likewise, two pieces of turkey bacon contain 310 mg of salt and two pieces of Down Home bacon contain 350 mg of salt. Still within range the target sodium range, consuming three pieces of the Down Home bacon does not equal 170 mg of salt (like three pieces of bacon), an important distinction to make.
Golden Corral’s breakfast buffet offers a number of low sodium options and substitutions for breakfast favorites. Golden Corral has taken strides to making breakfast a tasty, enjoyable restaurant meal everyone can enjoy, even on a low sodium diet.
