April is here and many are hoping the weather will spring upon us with a sense of renewal and warmth. And while April means many things apart from the beautiful colors of the season, it also means that the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival is near!
The 2014 edition of the event runs from April 3 until the 19, showcasing some truly stupendous works. Over two hundred in all, from multiple genres and from people representing 60 different countries.
The opening night of this truly wonderful film festival is on Thursday, April 3 with a 7 PM screening of Belle. Belle tells the story of an illegitimate, bi-racial daughter of a Royal Navy admiral in 18th Century Britain. The film was directed by London born director, Amma Asante, and debuted in 2013. If this doesn’t sound lovely enough, worry not, because there is a party after the opening screening.
Yes, this festival is regal enough to have a party to celebrate the exciting time of its opening. Immediately after the screening of Belle, those with tickets can head across the street from the St. Anthony Main Theatre to the Festival Pavilion. There you will be able to enjoy cocktails with filmmakers and actors, with great tasting food that will make you want to reverberate the night in your mind for days to come. Albeit a ticket to the opening night screening of Belle and the party will be about 75 dollars, or 65 for those with a student idea and membership to the Film Society, the price will be well worth the enjoyment of being at the festivities.
All of the other nights
I understand that you may not want to unload that much money from your bank account, but still want to check out the festival. The good news is that screenings for the art featured at this year’s events are on sale, and can be viewed here. The prices are affordable for the teacher and student alike, and will always be justified given the art and appreciation of culture that will be experienced at the festival. There are plenty of films and events to take in, and the events are well rounded with talented people from all over the world.
