My brothers and I enjoyed Lego building blocks when we were children in the 1960’s. We would spend hours at a time allowing our imaginations to guide us to build many different things. My children, who were born in 1981, 1986, and 1992, also had fun with Lego’s. Like my brothers and I decades before, they spent much time, creating unique items from scratch.
Lego’s were everywhere. I remember the building blocks in the kindergarten classrooms of two of my children. When we went to the pediatrician’s office or the Emergency Room, Lego’s would be awaiting us in the waiting room. Lego toys are still going strong today.
Lego building blocks were one of the top selling items during the 2013 Christmas season. Lego blocks today are very sophisticated. They come with parts that are designed to make specific projects. My husband and I purchased a Lego army tank set and race track for our grandchildren for Christmas.
Lego’s are getting an additional boost from the new Lego Movie, which will no doubt keep them front and center for quite a while. The movie grossed 69 million dollars on it’s opening weekend. It is second, behind Toy Story 3 for opening weekend ticket sales. This film is getting rave reviews with 112 out of 118 critics giving it a “fresh” rating.
Adults as well as children are falling in love with the Lego movie. One of my cousins and his adult son both said they enjoyed the film and will see it again. And my 6 year old grandson simply cannot stop talking about the movie.
I believe the Lego movie will do for today’s youth what the first Toy Story movie did in 1997. Toy Story was a movie the entire family could enjoy. And made old school toys popular during the video age. My mother purchased practically every toy from the movie for my youngest son. I had so much fun with him, playing with all the toys from my youth.
Lego’s will no doubt inspire the same nostalgia, for those of us who grew up in the age of real toys. I believe sales of Lego products will dominate the summer and sky rocket during Christmas 2014. In addition to being a great toy, Lego building blocks are educational. They bring out a child’s creativity help them focus, and utilize their fine motor skills.
