We all know that it is easy to talk to your parents when you are young. It is a little harder as you get older. When you try to talk to your parents do you fail because the words just do not come out right? Or maybe your parents are just not listening for some reason or another.
Do not let that stop you from talking to your parents. Communicating with your parents could be compared to driving. When you come to a road block do you give up, or take another route? I am sure you would take another route.
If your parents do not want to listen to you wait for a better time to talk, maybe after dinner when they are more relaxed. If you like to write maybe you can write them a letter about what you wanted to say. By doing this they will understand what you are trying to tell them, and they will get to know you better.
What if your parents want to talk and you don’t, how will you handle this? If they want to know how was school and you do not want to talk about it, tell them you will talk about it later when you are more relaxed. You can also change the subject and ask them how was their day.
When you are able to talk to your parents or write a letter make sure you do not send them mix messages. If your parents ask why you are in a bad mood, you would not want to say I do not want to talk about it with you, but I will talk about it with a friend. Your parents may feel that you do not trust them enough to help you with your problems.
If you had a serious problem and you needed your parents help, do not say I can handle it in a disrespectful way. Choose your words carefully and show your parents respect.
Colossians 4:6 says “Let your words always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should answer each person”.
Your parents are older and more experience than you or your friends. They will never misguide you but will always help you make the right choices. So learn to talk to your parents and get the best advice so that you will have a successful life.
