In the river towns of Bradford County, it is said that the sidewalks in town are rolled up at 5 p.m. Where do the locals eat when the average downtown business is closed? There are no major chain fine dining restaurants in Bradford County and most family-owned restaurants close their doors or their kitchens between 8 and 10 p.m., depending on the day of the week. It’s likely that you don’t want to resort to eating at the easily accessible fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s or Wendy’s. There are other places to eat, but they are typically found associated with the many local bars and grills, many of them scattered along US Route 6. You can find tasty and well made food in these locations, but you have to know where to go and what to ask for.
The Typical Fare:
Most of these are available no matter where you go:
Wings: Hot wings, or chicken wings with hot sauce or any other variety of flavored sauced wings, are a distinctly American fad. The quality and size of the wing, the crispiness of the fry, and the variety and quality of the sauces have made every American late night food junkie into a chicken wing connoisseur. You can get them pretty much anywhere or follow the progression of wing night at the various establishments to get the best price on wings. So it’s Captain Jack’s on Wednesdays, the Marie Antoinette on Thursdays, and so forth.
Honey Dipped Chicken: The typical honey dipped chicken basket comes with fries and contains three pieces of chicken, typically a chicken breast and two pieces of dark meat.
Cheesesteak or Chicken Cheese Steak: My favorite is a chicken cheesesteak with mushrooms and onions. You can usually get these with peppers as well.
The Establishments & Some Specialties:
The Marie Antoinette Inn: Just off US Route 6 in Wyalusing Township PA. The M.A. is known for its delicious Chicken Bacon Ranch Sandwich (order the grilled instead of the breaded), it serves an awesome chili and fantastic macaroni salad.
Riverstone Inn – US Route 6 Wysox PA on the east side of the Susquehanna River bridge. Try a Rachel instead of a Reuben and you will be hooked on this less fatty version of an old time favorite.
Captain Jack’s Bar and Grill – Main Street (US Route 6) Towanda PA one block from the Susquehanna River bridge. You can be sure to enjoy any one of their line of pirate themed Angus burgers.
Ram Zone – US Route 6 Wyalusing Borough PA. If you want a healthy turkey club sandwich or a delicious (chicken sandwich) Mighty Duck, this is the place for you to go.
The Wyalusing Hotel – off US Route 6 on Main Street Wyalusing. I like the reasonably priced roast beef dip at this historic hotel, bar and restaurant.
Wherever you go or whatever you choose, you can be sure that you won’t starve late at night in Bradford County PA. You may have to drive a few miles to get some chow, but the drive will be worth it. Come on out and enjoy the food and the company of your rural neighbors.
