Ask the next man you see the following question: If you were a groomsman and could have either an engraved stainless steel flask or steaks delivered to your doorstep, which would you prefer?
I asked this question of several of the men I know, including my husband, who has served as a best man, and the response was unanimous. Steaks. I asked a follow-up question, too, wanting to know if the men would rather have cuff links or a box of bacon, and the answer was overwhelmingly in favor of bacon.
Groomsmen are the guys the groom depends on, his best buddies, the men he’s likely to be friends with decades down the line. So, they should get what they really want for gifts, not what the bride or one of the mothers think they ought to want. And according to my informal poll, what they want is meat!
This means, if I were ever in the position to need a last minute gift for a groomsman, I know my first inclination would be to check out Omaha Steaks, where top quality steaks can be delivered straight to his home or office at the touch of a button, and where 80 slices of bacon were on sale this week for $25.99. That’s a lot of great BLTs.
Now, if that doesn’t about wrap things up for you, as gift ideas go, here are a few more untraditional gifts your groomsmen are sure to enjoy.
If the groom and his groomsmen became friends during their college days, a gift of alumni gear is especially meaningful. You can check your alma mater’s gift shop, or visit the Yahoo! Sports Shop for all sorts of college gear, including clothing, hats, watches, shave kits, and much more.
Books of movie passes are available from pretty much every theater chain, and redeemable at locations across the country. Check the theater’s website to make sure there are locations near your groomsmen, and then give them the gift of entertainment.
Xbox gift card
Speaking of entertainment, an Xbox gift card can be used for buying games, purchasing downloadable content, downloading movies and more. Give your groomsmen the gift of home entertainment with an Xbox gift card they can use however they want. Best of all, you can pick one up at any local game shop, or buy online and have it shipped out quickly.
My 12-year-old son suggested I include this one. We saw a photo a while back of a young groom and his wedding party wearing Justice League and Avengers t-shirts under their tuxedos. He thought that was pretty cool, and when I told him I was writing this article, he insisted that superhero shirts would be the perfect gift. Of course, he also said the groom shouldn’t mix and match Marvel and DC characters without a very good reason.
