Pench Tiger Reserve witnesses dense green forests and exotic flora and fauna. The wealth of flora and fauna in Pench Tiger Reserve represent “Satpuda-Maikal Lands.” This bio-geographical unit has remarkable significance of ecology in Madhya Pradesh. From humid sheltered valleys to deciduous dry forests, the heaving topology of the reserve supports medley of green vegetation. With lush layers of underwood, over-wood, shrubs, bamboo, climbers and herbs grasses, the forest typify the Mixed High Forest in structure and comparison. Pench Tiger Reserve – Wildlife Pench Tiger Reserve witnesses high diversity of habitat and supports huge and rich density of wildlife. This reserve is known as a major habitat of panther and tigers. In such areas, these are the major species among big cats.
The inhabitants of mammals include Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Barking Deer, Wildboar, Gaur, Sloth bear, Chaurasinga, Langur, Wild Dog, Mouse Deer, Rhesus Monkey, Jackal, Black Naped Hare, Hyena, Fox, Flying Squirrel and Porcupine and several aquatic lives, reptiles and amphibians.
Pench enjoys rich density of tiger population. According to wildlife census in 2007, there were around 12 panthers, 13 to 15 tigers and 7620 animals of other species, i.e. 966 Sambars, 310 gaurs, 2032 chitals, and more in reserve areas. According to all India census in 2010 about leopard, tiger, pray, co-predator and various habitats, Pench had around 13 tigers. In the year 2012, the population of tigers was grown up by 14 to 16 according to Monitoring of Tiger Phase IV.
The species of birds are both migratory and resident in these regions, including Grey hornbill, Malabar pied, Osprey, Indian Pitta, white eyed buzzard, fishing eagle, open bill stork and white necked stork. The waterfowls which migrate in winter are Poachards, Brahminy duck, coots, and bar-headed geese. You can see long-billied, white-rumped, King vultures and white scavenger which are the much endangered species of vultures in the Reserve.
The Facts Pench Tiger Reserve features Mowgli Pench Sanctuary, Priyadarshini Pench National Park and buffer. The national park is nestled among the southern Satpula slopes in central part of India. Pench River divides the national park and works as a lifeline of the flora and fauna of the park. The existing Tiger Reserve and its covered area has long-back and rich history of its conservation.
