Kimono Kult’s debut EP, “Hiding In The Light,” unveils a number of catchy, funky songs rooted in a sort of funk/afro-beat/dub/electronic sound that’s easy to get into. Kimono Kult features: Nicole Turley (Swahili Blonde, VAGENDA, WEAVE!), Teri Gender Bender (Bosnian Rainbows, Le Butcherettes), Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Bosnian Rainbows, Mars Volta, At The Drive-In, De Facto), John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Knights, Speed Dealer Moms, Swahili Blonde), Dante White (Detroit Cobras, Starlite Desperation, Dante Vs Zombies, Swahili Blonde), Laena Geronimo (The Like, Dante Vs Zombies, Raw Geronimo, Swahili Blonde). It’s not too dancey, which is something Mars Volta fans might appreciate. On the same token anyone familiar with Swahili Blonde or Bosnian Rainbows will note some of the funk and jazz experimental style from Swahili Blonde and the far more pop rock oriented style of Bosnian Rainbows. It will help, though, if the listener is versed in Spanish, as the lyrics are sung entirely in Spanish. So those looking for something with a little dance, some pop, some electronica, jazz…maybe even some funk or afro-beat should seriously check this four-song EP out. Fans of Swahili Blonde, Bosnian Rainbows or even Mars Volta will want to check this out even more. Those who simply like a good alt pop or dance/electronica track may find this a little too involved for them; then again, this may be the very thing they need to spice up their music taste just a little bit.
