I was listening to an oldies station, when Don’t go breaking my heart, by Elton John and KiKi Dee came on the air. This was a big hit, in 1976, and I contInue to enjoy the song today. It has one of those tunes that gets me dancing, no matter where I am.
This is a happy feel good song that is so drastically different from the type of music that is produced today. I can still hear the voice of Kasey Casem, announcing that Elton John and KiKi Dee’s duet was moving up his top 40 hit’s chart.
When Don’t go breaking my heart, first debuted, I remember asking myself, “Who is KiKi Dee, and how did she rate a hit song with Sir Elton John? Hearing that oldie but goodie caused me to wonder, where KiKi Dee is today. I found there was a lot about this talented woman that I was unaware of.
KiKi was born Pauline Matthews and her name was changed in 1963, when she began her recording career, with Fontana records in London. In 1970, KiKi had the distinction of being the first white British singer to be signed to the Tamla/Motown label.
Her first hit record in the UK, was the ballad Amoureuse, released in 1973. She is best known however for I’ve got the music in me, which was recorded in 1974, by the Kiki Dee Band, and topped the chart in America as well as the UK.
In 2013 Kiki Dee celebrated a half century in the music industry. Although not cranking out chart topping hit records, she has continued to perform. She is currently touring with Carmelo Luggeri, performing new music. She said she chose to sing new material and not just tour singing old songs.
In an interview KiKi Dee stated that she’s had the music in her for 50 years. The fact that she is still performing at an age when others are retiring, by choice or force, is a testament unto itself. Many in the music industry have fallen by the wayside, plagued by alcohol or drugs, dying young and or tragically. I belive Ms Dee indeed has the right to sing, ” I’ve (still) got the music in me”.
