Since I was born and raised in Kentucky, it follows that I feel the best bourbon in the world gets made in the Bluegrass State. Even though there are plenty places around the globe to enjoy a glass or two of bourbon I also happen to feel the best place to do so is in my home state. There’s just something extra special about enjoying the distinctive taste of Kentucky bourbon as close to the source as possible. Here are some of the best places to sample great bourbon when you come to Kentucky.
The Rickhouse, Bardstown
If you like the idea of drinking bourbon in a laid back small town setting, this is your place. They keep over 120 bourbons and they’re big on flights if you want to sample a range of bourbons.
Bluegrass Tavern, Lexington
The only problem you’re likely to run into here is choosing between the 200 plus different bourbons they serve many of which are out of production and hard to find. Look for some rare Four Roses Limited Edition Single Barrel Releases.
Jonathan’s at Gratz Park, Lexington
Not only does Jonathan’s have a solid bourbon lineup they also do several bourbon themed dinners per year with some of Kentucky’s master distillers. Look for Willett’s and Pappy Van Winkle.
Old Seelbach Bar, Louisville
A big part of the storied Old Seelbach Hotel is the Old Seelbach Bar. This is where you can imagine you’re part of Kentucky and Louisville’s history while you’re making some history of your own.
Brown Hotel Bar, Louisville
Another big part of Louisville’s upscale history, the Brown is another one of those places to see and be seen while enjoying an excellent bourbon.
The rejuvenated Whiskey Row section of downtown Louisville is starting to hum and Haymarket is a great place to stop in for a libation and soak in the bourbon infused atmosphere.
Proof on Main, Louisville
Part of the sleek and arty 21c Museum Hotel, Proof on Main is the opposite end of the spectrum as far as history and tradition are concerned. That doesn’t mean it’s not a great place to drink some good bourbon though.
