Having a need can cause someone to do some rather drastic things, it’s only natural when you’re lacking in a certain area that you reach out and grab whatever you can get to fill that void, in this year’s NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers did exactly that when they took Kelvin Benjamin in the first round. (sportsillustrated) There are people who have made the comment that Carolina just took Benjamin because he’s all that was left at the receiver position, and since they had a need for the position they pulled the trigger, although I believe it’s more about his incredible talent and his great hands, then again I could be biased as a Florida State fan. (cbssports) Benjamin is an incredibly solid player who has a bright future in the NFL, hopefully it’s all with the Carolina Panthers, with David Gettleman stating that watching Benjamin practice has made him think of a young Plaxico Burress, while that’s a good thing from a talent standpoint, let’s hope the off field problems that came with Burress don’t wind up plaguing Benjamin as well. (profootballtalk) As a Florida State fan I actually see more in common with another player from the same college than I do with Burress, that player being Anquan Boldin. (espn)
When Boldin entered the league there were plenty of knocks on him, even coming from the coaches at Florida State with Bobby Bowden stating that they all believed that he wouldn’t fare well because he needed another year in college, that he was nowhere near ready for the NFL. (usatoday) Boldin has been called slow, he’s been labeled just a possession receiver, he’s been given a ton of chains that should have held him down, but he’s done nothing but shine every time he’s given a chance, his stats speak volumes for a guy who supposedly wasn’t ready and shouldn’t have made an impact in the league, until he gained 217 yards in his debut game, then people paid attention. (revengeofthebirds) Benjamin has been labeled similarly to what Boldin has, and if history is any indication we should be seeing something amazing in week one of the NFL season, and it could be even bigger considering Benjamin will likely be the number receiver and won’t have a talent like Larry Fitzgerald to split receptions with in Carolina. It’ll be an interesting season for fans of the Panthers, I’m hoping it’s a great one, but still a bit apprehensive, we’ll see how it unfolds.
