Keeping Your Online Articles Interesting Over Time

by yak max

You’ve been writing online for a while now. Do you feel you’ve run out of subject matter? Do you find yourself making the same points over and over? Keeping your content interesting over time isn’t easy, for sure. Is there anything you can do to hold the interest of your readers when you’ve been writing for many years?

Get a life.

I’ve said it before and I’ll likely say it many times in the future. A boring person makes for a boring article. If all you do is sit around in your jammies, tapping away at the keyboard all day, what on earth can you possibly have write about? You can certainly write about writing, like I’m doing here. That covers the portion of your audience who write for a living. What about those other folks? What have you done lately that would interest those outside the writing community? Nothing? Well, then, get out there. Get a life worth sharing in your articles.

Don’t be afraid to be funny.

Not everyone is destined for the comedy hall of fame. So what if your jokes are corny? Share them anyway. There are a lot of corny folks out there. You should know. You’re one of them. So, throw them a line that will brighten their day, make them smile or at least give them a reason to keep reading. Don’t be so serious all the time. Everyone likes a good laugh. It doesn’t matter if they’re laughing with you or at you. The point is to make reading your articles a fun experience.

Be someone else.

In real life, you’re a mild mannered housewife (or hubby). As an online writer, you can shed that skin. Be whoever you want. Have fun inventing your writing persona. You can be bold, adventurous, daring and wild. Become so absorbed in your character that it overflows into your real life. Have fun with it. After all, when you’re having fun, it shows up in every facet of your life. It also makes your content more enjoyable for others to read.

Shake off your style.

You have a style you’re comfortable with. That doesn’t mean you can’t change things up a bit. Why not do a little reading of other people’s work? Pay close attention to their writing habits. Think what advice they would give on writing or just ask them. Follow someone else’s writing tips once in a while. You might be surprised to find they actually work. If not, at least they’ll bring a different flavor to your work.
