You wanted longer hair without the wait so you opted for hair extensions. Hair extensions attach temporarily to your real hair, giving full, long hairstyle in just a few hours. However, over time, your real hair will grow and the extension bond will slide down the hair shaft. This can lead to unwanted loss of hair which can be both embarrassing and difficult to style. Regardless of the extension type, you can slow slippage with good hair care. Ask a professional hairstylist to apply the extensions. With a few tips, you can wear that luxurious new hair for three to four months without worry.
Sleeping with Extensions
Before you slip into the sheets, pull your locks back into a loose ponytail. As a stylist and hair extension lover, I recommend that you use a fabric-covered ponytail holder. I wrap my hair loosely into a ponytail or make a puffy bun. Protect your hair extensions at night by pulling your hair back in a fabric-covered ponytail holder before you go to bed. Loosely braid the hair or pull it back in a low ponytail. If you have glued-in extensions, cinch the hair below the bonds.
In the Shower
Before you reach for your favorite scented shampoos, read the care label that came with your hair extensions. When you use the “wrong” shampoo, you can strip away the glue or whatever bond your hair is relying upon. Wash extensions by wetting hair and rubbing the product into the hair at the scalp and at the ends of your hair. Gently work the suds into the rest of your hair. Rinse away the shampoo using cool to warm water, never hot.
Condition the hair at the tips and always below the extension bonds. Don’t rub conditioner above or on the bonds, this will definitely lead to slippage. Rinse the product out with cool/warm water.
Gently squeeze the water from your hair. Pile the hair into your hands and then without rubbing, slightly twist the hair. Finally, press out the water by wrapping it in a towel.
Detangle, Brush and Style
If you want to keep your extensions from falling out, you should use a detangler. Since your hair extensions won’t have the benefit of the natural oils from your scalp, a detangling product will help alleviate these moisture issues. Comb out tangles with a wide tooth comb and allow the hair to air dry or blow dry it. When you comb, hold the hair at the bonds with one hand and comb with the other. If you do blow dry, don’t point the heat directly at the bond extensions.
Hair Extension Tips
Here’s something to remember, you do need to avoid washing your hair for two days after you apply your extensions. Your hair needs enough time for the bonds to set. Never use hair products that contains sulfur; it can make those bonds thin.
