Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive, and making fresh juice can be a disappointing experiment without good recipes. Try the following three, packed with healthy ginger guaranteed to get your tastebuds tingling. Even the kids in the family will enjoy their vegetables!
Why Ginger?
Ginger is a traditional medicinal herb. For years we’ve used ginger ale to settle an upset stomach. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, and stimulates sweating to assist your body in releasing toxins. It also helps with the following:
- indigestion
- motion sickness
- headaches
- inflammatory conditions such as arthritis
- boost the immune system
Adding it to anything will boost the health values so why not give the following a try? Purple Magic and the Thirst Quencher require a juicer. You can use a heavy duty blender but make certain to chop the veggies and fruits and grate the ginger. Your end result may be a bit chunkier and perhaps not as appealing to children, but the health benefits will be there. For best results, peel the ginger root before using it, by rubbing it with the back of a spoon, or using a vegetable peeler.
Purple Magic Juice
Energizing ginger and sugar of the beets and carrots make this a great replacement for your morning cup of joe!
- 2 medium beets
- 3 medium carrots (or 20 baby carrots)
- 1 lemon
- 3 Honeycrisp apples (or other “good for eating” apple)
- 1 inch of ginger (more for added zing)
Peel beets, carrots (organic veggies can just be washed well) and lemon and wash apples. Top and tail the vegetables and put all through juicer. Drink immediately for best taste! The color on this one is attractive but be careful, it stains. The sweetness of the beets, carrots and apples are counterbalanced by the lemon and the ginger!
Thirst Quencher
The perfect pick me up after a morning run. This one appeals to those looking for something a bit less sweet. Add sweetness with an apple or a swizzle of organic honey
- 1 inch of ginger
- ½ cucumber, diced
- 3 celery stalks with leaves
- 1 lemon
- 2 medium carrots
Wash and peel all and run through the juicer. Try a bit more ginger if you like the zing and want the added energy boost.
Frozen Melon Ginger Slushy
This recipe can easily be made in the blender and is the perfect non-alcoholic option for your next party! For those liking a bit more sweetness, add a swizzle of honey or some raspberries or blueberries.
- 1 cups of seeded, chopped watermelon
- 1 cup seeded, chopped honeydew melon
- 20 baby carrots
- 1 TB lime juice
- 1 TB lemon juice
- 1/2″ inch of ginger, grated
- ice cubes
Combine all in your blender and blend until smooth! Garnish with a watermelon triangle or a wedge of lemon or lime!
Experiment with different veggies and fruits to find combinations that work for you. I’ve used recipes from various sources, but always add my own touch based on personal preference. Want more sweetness? Add apples, berries or carrots. Need more zing, add more ginger or citrus!
