The recent finale of ABC’s “The Bachelor” featured the most controversial final rose ceremony and live after-show in the franchise’s history. But one thing it didn’t feature was the big “surprise” that host Chris Harrison kept touting throughout the evening.
While “Bachelor” star Juan Pablo Galavis ultimately dumped Clare Crawley and picked Nikki Ferrell on the taped finale, the pediatric nurse looked crestfallen when he told her, “I have a ring here in my pocket and I’m not going to use it. I’m not 100 percent sure I want to propose to you, but at the same time I’m 100 percent sure I don’t want to let you go.”
Still, there was buzz that Galavis planned to propose to Ferrell on the live “After the Final Rose” update show. Spoiler king Reality Steve even reported that producers put a monetary offer on the table for Galavis to propose to Ferrell on the after-show.
Clearly that didn’t happen. Galavis refused to even say he loved Ferrell on the live follow-up (“I’m not going to answer that question” he said when asked if he was in love), opting to keep the couple’s relationship status “private.” But viewers were still waiting for that big surprise.
At one point during the live show, Galavis played dumb when Harrison asked about the big surprise.
“That I had a big surprise? I don’t … You’re [the one] talking about a surprise, no.” Galavis said, before the host dashed backstage as the show cut to a commercial break.
Ay yi yi!
Harrison later explained to E! News that Galavis told an ABC network exec in Saint Lucia he had something special planned for the ‘After the Final Rose’ special, and that he even restated his plans via a text message: “So we included that in the show and, naturally, as things have gone this season with him, it was a big dud,” Harrison said.
The reality star certainly made it seem like he was going to propose to somebody when he carefully selected a 3.5-carat sparkler from jeweler Neil Lane.
“He was talking to me like a guy who is about to propose would talk, and he seemed to take it very seriously,” Lane revealed to People. “He indicated to me that he had found the right girl…He seemed excited about the moment and finding the best ring for this particular girl. When I left him, he seemed prepared to propose. There were other Bachelors over the years, like Jake Pavelka, who seemed less certain or who might have been struggling. Juan Pablo was not that way.”
So why did Juan Pabs change his tune? Sour grapes, perhaps? The seemingly bitter “Bachelor” hinted that the couple’s plans changed based on information they got from producers two weeks prior. That was right around the time the “Dancing With the Stars” cast was announced, a gig that past “Bachelor” stars Pavelka and Sean Lowe got, but JP didn’t.
An insider reported to Us Weekly there was major tension between Galavis and the show’s production team in the weeks leading up to the finale, causing the reality star to become “so fed up with everyone on staff there. He said he wasn’t going to do anything they said anymore.”
After the finale, Galavis blew off his scheduled “Good Morning America” appearance and has been laying low ever since. While some “Bachelor” alums think he “owes” it to fans to keep them in the loop regarding his relationship status, the 32-year-old Venezuelan soccer player seems to be rebelling against that too. Galavis declared he is “done” with the show, and later posted an Instagram pic of himself and Ferrell with the caption: “We are FREE.”
