At the end of Marvel’s “The Avengers,” there is a post-credit scene where the creature that Loki was working with to send aliens to attack the earth turned to the camera for the first time and was revealed. That character was the villain Thanos. He will also be pulling the strings for the bad guys in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which comes out later this year.
With Thanos rumored to be the major villain in the third “Avengers” movie in 2018, Marvel has announced who will play Thanos, or at least voice him, in the Marvel movies. Josh Brolin has signed on to play Thanos, starting with this year’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie. This makes it appear that Brolin will just be voicing him at this point, although motion capture might be possible in the future when Thanos is more of an active participant.
Who is Thanos?
Thanos is a very powerful, evil and destructive alien who seeks only one thing – to conquer all worlds and destroy everything that stands in his way. In the comic books, Thanos was doing all this to impress his mistress, which was Death embodied. However, he betrayed even her and went off on his own, still with one focus in his life, to kill everyone and destroy everything. His power comes from possession of the Infinity Gauntlets, which has been set up in the first few Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
Why is Josh Brolin Perfect?
Many people may question why someone with the stature of Josh Brolin was cast for what is just basically just a voice role. However, Marvel is the same studio that cast Vin Diesel to voice a character (Groot) that just has one line that he repeats throughout the entire movie (“I am Groot”). Brolin, who has played George Bush, took on a tragic turn in “No Country for Old Men” and got his big break in “The Goonies,” might just want to play in a comic book movie. He would have been perfect as Batman, but this is a nice consolation prize. Brolin also appears later this year in a different kind of comic book movie, with a role in “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.”
What storyline will come from this villain?
It is pretty clear that the story for Thanos, when the third “Avengers” movie rolls around, will be the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. What that entails is Thanos using the Infinity Gems to add to his Infinity Gauntlet glove, which gives him power over everything, a purely omnipotent power. He would be unbeatable. Those key “gems” have already started to be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, with the cube from “Captain America: The First Avenger” and the liquid from “Thor: The Dark World” as the first two.
