I love Jolly Rancher candy. What I don’t love – and really must live without – are the “empty” carbohydrates they have. They’re empty carbohydrates because they’re not necessary carbohydrates.
Necessary carbs are the ones found in just about every food you find: french fries, bread, rice, pasta, pizza…you know, all the really good stuff. However, those foods are normal consumption: the foods you need to eat to survive.
When you’re a diabetic, whether Type I or Type II, you really have to count every carbohydrate that goes into your mouth. When you are on a limited-per-day carbohydrate diet, those numbers add up pretty quick. There really isn’t much room left over for high-carb snacks like potato chips, popcorn, ice cream or candy. Even sugar-free candy and sugar-free ice cream are packed with too many carbs.
But I stumbled across something the other day that got me all excited.
I was looking for some Crystal Light drink mixes. I’ve tried them before and wasn’t really that impressed with them but I thought maybe it was time to try them again. I love my iced tea but also like a little variety and I’m trying to cut down on the sugar-free sodas too (too much caffeine, even in the zero products).
Right beside the Crystal Light mixes at my local Ingles store was a product I’d never seen before: Jolly Rancher Green Apple and Watermelon flavored Singles To Go, six packs to a box. And when I read the label, it was enough to make me reach for every box of Green Apple flavor available. Only five calories per pack (the same as the Crystal Light) and NO CARBOHYDRATES!
It tastes just like the Green Apple candy. The five calories aren’t too bad, especially if you use it like I do: a decadent little treat once or twice a day. The calories are a completely different ball game. I seem to be able to control the calories a lot easier than the carbs. So many of my favorite foods are loaded with carbohydrates: the above-mentioned plus corn, apples, most fruits and a lot of vegetables, and all those snacks, snacks, snacks. I have managed to replace most of my snacking with fresh fruits such as berries and grapes in proper portions.
The Jolly Rancher Singles To Go drinks are filling. I snack a lot less because it tastes just like the candy and I use it as a treat.
With only five calories and no carbohydrates, these tasty little treats are good for diabetics and dieters alike. But especially for diabetics this taste treat can definitely be added to your list!
