When I first joined AARP, I was researching the possibility of buying some supplemental insurance coverage, because Medicare pays only 80 percent of any hospitalization, including surgery. So to minimize my out-of-pocket expense, I had to supplement the coverage I had. In the past, I received information about joining AARP but ignored any advertisements and offerings I received in the mail. I was suspicious of everything AARP, because I had a professor who had nothing good to say about it and let the class know. So my thoughts were nothing short of negative until the day I needed something from them.
I logged onto the AARP website and requested information about the United Health Care Supplement, and while I was there, I decided, out of curiosity, to look closer at what else AARP had to offer, and the rest is history. Navigating through the site, I discovered I could shop online and receive immediate discounts on purchases, and prescription drugs. I also discovered I could present my membership card at leading retailers and restaurants and receive discounts on food and drink. I am an avid movie goer, and movie theater popcorn lover, to me there is no other popcorn that taste as good as movie popcorn. As an AARP member, I enjoy receiving $3 off the cost of popcorn by presenting my membership card at movie theaters.
Joining AARP was the best thing for me. For $16 a year, you will receive a host of benefits. To join AARP, go to www.aarp.com, click on the “join” icon at the top left of the screen.
Membership is immediate after you pay for your subscription online. Once you become a member, create a user name and password, click on member benefits, and enjoy hundreds of discounts from department stores, such as Macy’s, Recently, I bought a Kindle Fire at a 10 percent discount with free shipping because I was an AARP member. Also I was able to get my Lantus SoloSTAR prescription for 33 percent off the price of the drug.
I have been a member of AARP since 2006 and have enjoyed much of the amenities they have to offer.
