The rumors for the past few months indicated that Jason Momoa was cast in the upcoming “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” movie and many predicted he would play Aquaman. Momoa has laughed off the rumors in interviews ever since them, denying them the entire time. However, it turns out that the rumors were true and Momoa was simply toeing the company line, denying things until they were made public. It was the Hollywood Reporter that broke the news, so now the question is what this means for Momoa and the “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” movie.
This won’t be Momoa’s first foray into the comic book world. While television fans know him from both “Stargate: Atlantis” and “Game of Thrones,” he had his biggest success on the movie screens with the 2011 adaptation “Conan the Barbarian.” The movie franchise reboot, which was originally made with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role, was not a success. Momoa was also in the running to play Drax the Destroyer in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” a role that eventually went to WWE star Batista.
Momoa joked when asked recently why anyone would think he would play Aquaman, pointing out Aquaman’s blonde hair. However, his strong presence and skills on shows like “Game of Thrones” could help him play the role of the King of Atlantis. While Aquaman has become quite a joke in pop culture circles, he is much more powerful than anyone gives him credit for. The joke is that his only power is talking to fishes. However, he also has superhuman strength, is practically bullet proof and is quite arrogant.
Geoff Johns rebooted Aquaman in the New DC 52 and tried to eliminate the stigma that made him a joke by having him respond to people who made fun of him. It worked and now it will be interesting to see how the movie world treats him when he finally appears on the big screen.
The Possible Storyline
Aquaman will make his first movie appearance in “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” if the rumors are to be believed. From what sources have said, Aquaman is looking for Superman, wanting him to answer for the destruction to the seas and oceans caused by the battles in “Man of Steel.” He is also going to be one of the main members of the “Justice League” movie, which is rumored to be based on the New DC 52 storyline featuring Darkseid.
