The mere mention of the word “cosmetic surgery” elicits imagination of a bright operating room complete with shiny scalpel, surgical knife and a bespectacled surgeon. More often than not, we also usually equate cosmetic surgery with the typical facelift, rhinoplasty, liposuction, breast augmentation, as well as Botox injections and skin rejuvenation treatments.
The latest data from the American Society of Plastic Surgery shows that popularity of cosmetic surgery has surged at an all time high. The 2013 data revealed that there are a total of 15.1 million cosmetic surgeries, both invasive and minimally-invasive, that were performed. This is a 104% increase compared to a report for the year 2010. In the same report, it is not surprising that the most common procedures ranked at the top 5 list.
This rise is prompted in a variety of reasons why both men and women seek out getting these cosmetic procedures done. Among the most compelling reasons why people get enhancements done include the endless quest to look young, improve self-esteem, correct birth defects, accidents or correct a prior surgery. Also, with the recent rise of the selfie-generation, this obsession of taking one’s picture has also fueled an expected rise in cosmetic surgery cases, even among the youth.
But unbeknownst to many, procedures that aim to enhance the natural beauty covers a wide spectrum of other treatments that may cause you to raise your eyebrows and scratch your head with puzzlement. Here is a list of some of the most bizarre cosmetic procedures that you never expect to exist.
Asian double eyelid surgery
Surprisingly, this seemingly weird cosmetic surgery is not as uncommon as you might think it is. Asian double eyelid surgery or East Asian Blepharoplasty is actually on the number 3 list of the top 5 surgical cosmetic procedures in 2013. There were a total of 216,000 double eyelid surgery procedures performed, which translates to a 6% increase compared to that of 2012, making it one of the cosmetic surgeries to look out for.
It is most commonly performed among Asians who have monolids or naturally do not have the crease on the upper eyelid. This makes them look tired, disinterested and distant. The procedure involves the removal of fat pads under the upper eyelid to create that crease to open up the eyes more and make it look bigger. This procedure is especially popular in East Asia, especially in South Korea.
Apart from opening up the eyes and making it look bigger for aesthetics reasons, double eyelid surgery is also performed to those who have droopy eyelids and can also be performed to correct some cases of ptosis.
Iris Color Surgery
What is your natural eye color? If you naturally have brown eyes, but have always wanted those bright blue eyes, you would think that the only solution is to wear colored cumbersome contact lenses, right? Well, think again.
There are actually several cosmetic procedures that are able to change your eye color, permanently. One of which is the use of low-energy laser that can change brown eyes to blue eyes. It works by disrupting the thin layer of brown pigments that cover the front surface of the iris. It initiates a natural and gradual tissue-removal process revealing the supposed natural blue eye color that we have underneath. However, this non-invasive treatment is only limited to change brown eyes to blue eyes and not with any other eye color.
Another method of permanently changing the eye color is by the use of an artificial iris implant. Compared to the laser procedure, this method involves making an incision of about 2.88 mm in the cornea and placing a colored disc in front of the iris. The artificial iris disc is a thin, non-toxic prosthesis similar to the ophthalmic grade silicone used in intraocular lenses. The procedure takes a relatively short time to perform of about 15 minutes on each eye.
A word of caution for these procedures, the laser method is still on its research and development stages and has been linked to cause pigmentary glaucoma. While, the artificial iris implant has yet to get FDA approval. Also, in an article posted on OddityCentral, a certain Dr. Gregory J. Pamel, a corneal and refraction surgeon in Manhattan, said that there are no approved devices to permanently change the eye color in the US.
Apart from her soulful and beaming eyes, UK recording sensation Cheryl Cole is admired for her dimpled wide smile. You no longer have to go crazy by folding over your cheeks and putting a scotch tape over it overnight just to get those adorable dimples. There is actually a cosmetic procedure to create the dimples, and it is called dimpleplasty.
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia. It involves the removal of a small amount of muscle in the cheek area to make a depression similar to a dimple. The incision is made through the inside of the mouth leaving no traces of external scars. The procedure only takes about 30 minutes to complete. And in about a week’s time, you can now smile all cutesy with your new dimples.
If creating a dimple is not enough to make you feel happy when you smile because of a droopy mouth corner, a procedure called Smile Surgery could be the bizarre procedure to finally give you that smile that you really want.
In an article posted in MSN, this aesthetic procedure has gained popularity, yet again in South Korea. In a promotional video of the procedure from a surgical center, Smile Surgery seeks to permanently provide patients with smiling faces and seeks to create “a pleasant and memorable appearance that is bright and gentle.” The procedure involves weakening the muscles that pull down the mouth corners and strengthening those that lift it. It involves a short recovery period with final results evident after about three to six months.
Now this cosmetic procedure could very be the last thing that is in your mind. But apparently with a Voice Lift, you can actually sound younger than you really are. Talk about getting beauty enhancement that is skin deep.
Our voice changes overtime as we change and becomes thin and breathy. This causes your voice to become inaudible to most people, a typical voice characteristic in old people. According to Dr. Steven Zeitels, associate doctor at the Harvard Medical Society and a laryngologist, “Over time, from the use of the voice, they actually decrease in pliability. They become stiffer, which makes it more difficult for them to vibrate.” Other reasons that change the voice are diseases, physical injuries, as well as singing, smoking and even day-to-day talking.
Voice Lift can be performed using vocal exercise techniques, surgical procedures or both. For the surgical method, the voice can be altered by injecting a material into the vocal fold to paralyze the middle fold. Another method is by altering the cartilages in the larynx or voice box.
Never always assume that the world of cosmetic surgery is just reserved for women. Among the crazy surgical aesthetics procedures performed among men is beard implants. It has become a popular cosmetic procedure among men to create that more masculine and scruffy appearance.
The procedure is performed similar to a hair transplant procedure, where hair grafts are harvested from the donor site at the back of the head. These grafts are then strategically transplanted to the recipient site. This helps create a natural hair growth where there once was naturally present or to fill in a once sparse beard.
While most people never really mind how their belly buttons look like, apparently there are quite a few who are overly concerned with this aspect. So whether you prefer to an innie or an outie, umbilicoplasty or popularly known as belly button surgery can aesthetically improve how your navel will look like when you are in your bikini or go shirtless.
There are several surgical techniques used to perform this procedure. But typically, it involves cutting some skin in the belly button to alter its shape, as well as reduce the visibility of external scars. Umbilicoplasty is also usually performed with other cosmetic procedures, like abdominoplasty or liposuction, as per assessment of the surgeon.
Seeking the Right Doctor
While these procedures may sound strange to most of you, these actually do exist. And since most of these procedures involve cutting or having a medical apparatus touch your body, it is always best to do a thorough research and approach the right doctor to perform these procedures.
Seek out a doctor that is board certified and has had a long, successful experience in the procedure. Also, it is best that you approach a doctor that allows you to raise questions and concerns and answer them in a professional. More importantly, an excellent cosmetic surgeon will strive to achieve a natural and harmonious look rather than seek out perfection.
