Everyone knows by now the importance of an emergency supply kit. You never know when a storm can suddenly happen and you are left stranded in your home for days. You probably know the basic items to include in the kit, but before you start, take notice of the things you should not include.
This item will usually end up dehydrating you. Soda is the last thing you need in an emergency. You want water which will help you stay hydrated. If you start drinking less soda now and more water it will be easier during an emergency. Believe it or not this is a popular item that is most often placed into emergency kits.
Salty and Sugary Foods
A bag of potato chips will not help you survive when it is an emergency, so you don’t want to fill your emergency bin with items like these. You want food items that not only have a long shelf life, but that will help you to keep your energy fueled up. So when it comes to food, splurge on better items than junk food. The same goes for sugary items, since this will end up making you feel tired in the long run.
In an emergency situation you don’t need toys for your kids. Filling your bag with toys and all things that you feel they need to play with is not necessary. This will take up more room, and you may end up leaving out essential items. You may think this is common sense, but you will be surprised at how many toys end up in an emergency bag.
Yes all of us have special things that have been given to you from family members, who you love. However these are not items that you will want to bring with you in your emergency survival kit. If they are that important than you can put them in a safe, however carrying these items with you is really not necessary. Especially if you have to be evacuated from your home.
I have heard of people bringing along their favorite books in an emergency. Placing a bunch of books into this kit will end up making your bag heavier than it needs to be, and more difficult to travel if you need to. Remember that this bag is for an emergency so you will not need to be worrying about reading books during this time.
If you are packing an emergency kit you may be thinking about whether or not you are stuck outside during an evacuation. Therefore you may be tempted to pack some bug spray or several jars of bug spray. While this may seem like it makes sense, it is just not an essential item.
