I recently sat down to talk to Scott Coner about his return to Nashville and Country Music after 20 years and about his hot new single, “Feels Like Friday.”
Hey Scott, welcome back. So twenty years ago you came to Nashville and then you left, what happened?
A Yeah, about 20 years ago I came to Nashville and had been doing some writing and got an opportunity to record with Charlie. He had been doing a guest host on a program called, “Sunday in the South,” or something like that back then. He had run across one of my songs and we met and we decided to work together a little bit and we worked in a little studio outside of Nashville in Mt. Juliet and recorded together. I finished the project myself and me and my wife found out that we were going to be having a baby and that just changed everything for us. I wanted to be with my family. We also had another little girl right after that and our oldest is getting ready to go to college this fall and the other one is in High School so it is a good time to get back in. That project has never been released. We have just been sitting on it. This project that we have got now, “Feels like Friday,” CD has got Tanya Tucker and T. Graham Brown both on it. By the way, this morning we did a radio show at WSM and T actually showed up unannounced and that was really nice. He did a song with me. I didn’t even know he was going to come in so that was really nice.
Q That was a nice surprise. He just showed up?
A Yes, we have a duet that I wrote called, “Sanibel,” on the album and he showed up to perform it with me.
Q Have you released the CD yet?
A The CD was released today. That is the reason why I was over at WSM at the Opryland Hotel. We did the live interview and the live release from there this morning.
Q Oh, okay. I watched the music video for, “Feels like Friday.”
A Did you like it?
Q Oh yeah, absolutely.
A I am really happy with it. I loved working with Tanya doing the duet and then T. Graham Brown did the duet as well and both of those songs are songs I have written. We have the, “Feels like Friday,” which is the single release and I am very happy with it. I am very excited.
Q When you are talking about Charlie, are you talking about Charlie Daniels?
Q Okay, that’s what I thought but I wanted to confirm. So where do you actually live?
A I live just outside of Franklin, Indiana.
Q Oh wow.
A It’s about 3 and 1/2 hours from Nashville.
Q So you drove in there this morning?
A I spent the night in Nashville last night. I am in Nashville a lot but this is where our little girls went to school so it just works better to let them finish up their school.
Q And that is where you raised them?
Q So that is where your family is from?
Q Had you ever lived in Nashville?
A No. I never committed to living in Nashville. My wife and I are getting online a lot these days and looking around. We are looking for a potential, we are not sure if it is going to be a condominium or a home yet but we are looking around. It is a nice town. Nashville has a lot of cool places. We really like it in the Mt. Juliet area an awful lot.
Q Mt. Juliet is wonderful. I love it there too. It is pricey though.
A Yeah, they have a book store and a nice movie house. That is really all I need so but I like it out there.
Q I know commuting can get tough.
A I was kind of keyed up about this early morning radio show. Seven-thirty to sing is really early in the morning so I was a little apprehensive about playing music at 7:30 a.m.
Q Well it is hard. Most musicians are night singers.
A Yeah. Yeah. I get up early everyday but I can’t say I get up early and sing every day. That was a little different.
Q Okay, what are your expectations with this album?
A Feels like Friday is getting positive reviews so far. There is a pop dance mix of the single getting ready to be released at pop radio. We are really feeling good about it. It seems to be getting a very solid response at radio. We haven’t heard any negatives so I think that’s good.
Q Do you have a message you would like to get out there about your new CD, your outlook on life and you’re making music once again?
A If you have got a dream, whatever it is, if you are willing to hold onto that dream, your opportunity will come.
I was really impressed with Scott in general. He was well spoken, is super talented and has great values. I love that he put his family first and made sure that his little girls had a Daddy at home during their formative years and that his wife didn’t have to raise his daughters alone. It certainly is well past time for Scott to get back out there and to follow his dreams now that his girls are grown up and heading into their own lives. Welcome back Scott or should we say welcome home?
