A debate that has been going on for many years is whether or not Cell is capable of destroying a solar system. It’s a debate that will probably never end and it certainly won’t be slowing down any time soon. I happen to be thinking about the subject right now so I figured I’d throw a little bit of my take in. In the end, it all comes down to our own opinions so this is just the way I look at it.
The first thing I would like to get out the way, before all else, is that Cell is not stupid. In fact, he could very well be the most intelligent villain in all of Dragon Ball Z. He could even be the most intelligent villain in all of DB/Z/GT for that matter. Remember, he is an android and his brain is a super computer. He knows what it takes to destroy the Earth, how big the sun is compared to the Earth, and therefore there is no reason for him not to know what it takes to destroy the sun.
Along with the matter of being intelligent, I want to point out that no one in Dragon Ball is stupid, not even Goku. People seem to have this strange idea that Goku is a moron and knows nothing. That makes absolutely no sense. Goku is considered a fighting genius for a reason. It’s because that is exactly what he is, a genius. Saying Goku can’t make smart decisions in a fight because he doesn’t know how to drive a car is like saying Mike Tyson could never be a boxing champion because he doesn’t know what 8 x 8 is. Not saying Mike doesn’t know but you get the general point I hope. The Dragon Ball characters know what it takes to destroy things. When Roshi and Piccolo both destroyed the moon, they didn’t sit there and debate if they could, they just did it. When Vegeta said he would blow up the Earth, He didn’t debate on it, he was just going to do it. And Goku was no fool. Obviously Vegeta was going to do it and Goku knew.
A huge fact people fail to acknowledge is that whenever Frieza was destroying planets, he used maybe one percent of his power. He destroyed Planet Vegeta while laughing. I highly doubt he was really focusing on how much energy he needed. Then people say he failed to destroy Namek. He already explained that he held back. Since Frieza barely used any energy to destroy planets, then why would it be so farfetched for a weaker Vegeta to destroy planets using all his energy?
The other issue people like to bring up is that no one ever destroyed a star in Dragon Ball so it must not be possible. This too makes no sense. None of the villains ever had a reason to do it other than Buu. Frieza couldn’t destroy stars, but either way, he conquered planets. That was his thing, no reason to destroy anything unless he felt he had to. The androids couldn’t either, but their goal was to kill Goku, nothing more. Even in GT, Baby wanted to conquer everything and Omega Shenron wanted to make the universe whither away to nothing. He never had intentions on destroying things outright. Far as Buu goes, he just liked to play and destroy things and he actually did destroy stars so that really throws everything out the window anyways. Now as far as Cell goes, He wanted to prove he’s the strongest and then destroy the planet. He had no intention on destroying the sun until he realized he could. Again, he’s not stupid, he knew what it took to destroy the sun and he realized after his power boost, from the Saiyan Cells in him, that he could do it. He had no reason to lie. And we all know that if they thought he was lying, they would call him out on it. Every time someone thought a lie was being told, they would call it out.
The last thing I can think of seeing people bring up is that Cell’s beam wasn’t big enough to destroy a whole solar system. That thought too makes no sense. There’s no way to even make an argument to justify that thought so I have no idea why people bring it up. Every single energy blast in the entire series has always been smaller than the thing it was hitting and destroyed. The only thing I can think of that would fit the picture is when people fired beams at other people and the beams were bigger than them. But the island, moon, and even planet busters were all very much smaller than the objects they were hitting so saying Cell’s beam was to small to hit a solar system doesn’t make sense. It’s obviously the force from the blast that has to be considered.
So can Cell bust a solar system? Well the official Dragon Ball guide says he can and that’s not exactly something you argue with. But people still like to argue it since he never actually did it. The funny thing about that is that there’s this thing called saving the world that heroes do. He didn’t do it because the heroes stopped him like they were suppose to do. In the end it comes down to how you took it. If you believe he could do it then he could. If you believe he couldn’t then he couldn’t. I personally believe he’s a solar system buster. I see no reason why not, especially when the official guide says he is.
