If you own an iRobot Roomba Vacuum Cleaner at some point you are going to have to invest in new brushes and filters to keep your Robotic Vacuum running and in tip top shape. It is wise to shop around for these items because you can save a considerable amount with just a little checking. Depending on how often you use your Roomba and the conditions of your home you may want to replace brushes more or less often. You can make them last but every now and then a new brush is in order. I have found that these brushes which fit the 500 series Roomba will last longer than the ones I used to buy for the previous models.
I also upgraded my two 500 series iRobot Roomba’s Dust bin with the AeroVac Upgrade Kit for both of my Vacuums. This further reduced the need for replacing brushes by getting more of the dirt and hair into the dust bin instead of getting caught in the brushes.
What is in the kit
The kit includes enough brushes to replace all the brushes on one Roomba. The maintenance kit contains one bristle brush, one flexible beater brush, and one side brush with screw. It also provides one brush cleaning tool and Three reusable dust-reducing filters. My photo only shows two filters since I used one already. The items that are in the kit are identical to the ones that are on your original Roomba.
Changing Brushes and Cleaning your Roomba
I always get a laugh when I get out my cleaning kit that I use to clean my Vacuums. It just seems a little funny to clean your vacuum cleaner. I keep two plastic bins one contains things I need for cleaning like extra brushes, tweezers, small scissors, a screw driver, extra filters, brush cleaning tools, and a can of air. The other plastic bin is empty and I use this to empty the dirt bins and put any build up hair/dust that I clean off the brushes. I bring a dust buster and my supplies to the spot where I will clean the robots.
First remove your dirt bin while the robot is in it’s upright position. Open the door and empty what is visible into the empty plastic bin. Then slide out the filter and use the Dustbuster to clean it well. I also use the dust buster to vacuum any dust out of the inside of the dust buster. If there is any damage to your filter or you can not get it clean replace it with a new one from your kit. I probably change out my filter once every 4 months. Set aside the cleaned out dirt bin.
Next turn your Roomba upside down and pull up on the brush cage guard to reveal the brushes inside(there is a tab that has to be pressed to release the guard). Remove both brushes and remove end caps and removable pieces. Use scissors to cut off any hair off the ends. Use the brush cleaning tool to remove hair stuck on your brush. This can be a little tedious but it is worth it. Pay special attention to the ends of your brushes as this debris can get the robot jammed and make it eat up the gears. If your brush is beyond cleaning change it. I probably give my Roombas new brushes once a year. If you are replacing your brush remove and retain any plastic end caps that you might be able to reuse if you lose one.
After cleaning both brushes I set them to the side and clean out the box with my dust buster. Take a damp rag and wipe off the sensors. I use my can of air to get out anything left.
The next thing I tackle are cleaning or changing the side brush and the wheel in the front. Remove the side brush using the screw driver and clean off any hair or debris. Vacuum with a dust buster and give it a spray of air. Pull the front wheel off your robot and remove the wheel. Clean off any dirt or hair near the axle as this can make it hard on your robot motor. Give it a spray with the canned air when you have all visible dirt removed. The front wheel is not included in the kit and I have yet to have to replace mine but they are available for sale.
It is a good idea to remove the cover every once in awhile too and vacuum any dirt that has gotten stuck in there. I am very careful when I do this and use the canned air to remove dust from delicate areas. Replace the back and all the brushes. Finally put the dust bin back in and your Robot is renewed.
Cost and Value of the Roomba Maintenance Kit
Shop around for the best price for your replacement brushes. The iRobot Store seems to be the most expensive but sometimes you can get a coupon deal. I usually find the best prices on Amazon. It does seem like a lot to pay for brushes and filters but I feel that replacing brushes and filters and spending the time to clean my robot makes them last longer. I have had my 500 series robots for about four years and they continue to work with with regular cleaning and replacing of worn out parts.
