As someone that has spent a lot of time on the internet reading political articles, one thing that has stood out to me over the years is just how mean commenters can be. Especially the Republican commenters. I’m not saying the Democrat/Liberal commenters are innocent, but 9 times out of 10 it seems the Republicans resort to name calling.
Below are a couple links to political articles I found on the web. If you have a few minutes please read through some of the comments. When you come to a negative comment (with name-calling) please take a moment to see if the commenter is a Liberal (Democrat) or Conservative (Republican). It’s generally not hard to tell. I would advise you to set a timer for 5 minutes so you don’t get sucked in. (It’s a hard world to get out of. You’ll need an escape. So set that timer otherwise you could lose an hour or two!)
This article is about Obama having to go it alone. Here’s a few of the terms used to describe the President: liar, idiot, moron, President Clueless, dictator. In political articles like this, insulting the President is pretty standard. However, the real fun begins when the commenters start insulting each other. In this article about Republicans using Obama’s “I have a pen and a phone” quote, the comments get downright nasty. A lot of stuff I can’t even put in this article. But again, most of the name calling and negativity comes from the right. Why is that?
I recently wrote an article about The State of the Union Address. I mentioned in the article that, despite being an Independent, I enjoyed the speech very much. Just to be clear, I never said I thought Obama was a great president, but to be honest I think he’s done as good of a job as anyone could do under the circumstances. He took over the country that was decimated by the previous administration and has a congress that refuses to work with him, but I digress. Most of the responses were from angry Republicans. All of the name calling was from Republicans. I was called an “idiot” several times. I was told I was “uniformed” (then I asked the commenter to inform me, he declined my invitation), and I was told that I rode the short bus.
As an Independent, I’m not even their enemy. I just want more information. I want these people to back up their claims. I’m not sure how it works for most people, but if you want me to do something, calling me an idiot and telling me I ride the short bus will not get me to do whatever it is you want me to do.
It seems foolish to resort to name calling with me. I am an Independent. That means I am an “undecided” voter. A voter they desperately need. So if they need me, why are they insulting me? I just don’t get it at all. Instead of calling anyone who disagrees with them names, why don’t they calmly and rationally explain their viewpoints and tell me why I should vote for their party?
So my question is, why are Republicans so bitter towards anyone that disagrees with them?
