Kaye Tuckerman is Inglot Cosmetics new Creative Director. Tuckerman shares with me her background, her new role as Creative Director and the trends for Summer into Fall 2014 at Inglot Cosmetics.
I’m Australian and prior to joining Inglot I was a freelancer. I traveled the world doing theatre, film and TV. When I finally got my Green Card I decided to move to New York. Before that I was designing films in Kenya. I was a production designer and art director overseeing wardrobe and makeup for very small low budget local productions and training young art directors. I worked on everything from small local productions to multimillion dollar and high profile campaigns such as Nike and Nokia, feature films and large festivals. My work required that I travel frequently. I would sometimes be in Nairobi, Kilimanjaro or camping out on location at Lake Magadi.
Working with Inglot
I started with Inglot in August 2013. One day I was walking down Times Square at 48th and Broadway and I saw this store (Inglot). It looked very pretty and I decided to go inside. I started playing with the makeup and the mattifying makeup primer. I thought Inglot was an amazing brand which I’d always seen in Europe. Fast forward two years later my friend said he was now working at Inglot and asked if I would be interested in coming on board. I told him that I loved Inglot!
It’s always nice when you end up working for a company that you believe in the quality of their products and its price point. It’s an added bonus when you like the people that you work for and with. All of that is important to me in terms of who I work with. While I didn’t get to meet Mr. Inglot (Founder of Inglot) before he passed, everyone had great things to say about him. He was so passionate about Inglot and the cosmetics industry. It is so lovely when someone has such a passion for something that they develop a brand. Over the years Inglot has become a favorite of many makeup artists in the professional circles and increasingly so with makeup lovers. Certainly at the makeup trade shows the Inglot booth is very popular.
How a theatre background combines well with the Inglot Creative Director role
I used to be a performer and theatre has always been a great passion of mine. I had done a great deal of film and theatre work in Australia. When I moved here to New York City, I started auditioning for Broadway shows. I booked the national Broadway tour of “Mama Mia,” and I was out on the road for two years. Now I’m back in New York.
Working in the arts is such a privileged industry that you can’t just sit back and let the work come to you. I wanted to remain creative and understand the whole process. I wasn’t content just being the actor, singer or dancer. When I was studying directing I got a chance to work on “The Matrix.” Part of my contract to work on that movie was to learn as much as I could about film making, from producing all the way down to art directing, bullet time, wardrobe, hair, makeup and how it all fits together. It’s important in the arts to understand how every party contributes to the bigger picture.
Role as Creative Director at Inglot
As Inglot’s Creative Director I work with the television and film network and theatre communities that need products. I deal with the Broadway shows backstage. If they’re doing a front of the house promotion as well and they want me to design a range of products for their audience members to cross promote, I work with them on that. I also work with the makeup designers for the Broadway shows and work out a way for them to get a palette for the talent that is within their budget so that the actors can have it backstage at their makeup stations. In theatre the actors do their own makeup.
People love the format of Inglot’s “Freedom System” because it’s compact, actors don’t need multiple cosmetics items on the makeup stations backstage. Our makeup will 100% cover whatever the performers are working with whether it is tattoos, skin discoloration or other skin concerns . Makeup artists love it because you’re able to have all of the things that you need in one palette with the “Freedom System.”
As Creative Director my role is to expand the awareness, knowledge and interest of the Inglot brand wherever possible.
Trends for Summer into Fall 2014 at Inglot
Radiant Orchid is the Pantone Color of the Year this season. It’s a poppy, pinky, purple, mauvey color. Inglot has done some really great promotions with that recently. We offer very vibrant, fresh, summery and floral colors for our Spring-Summer 2014 products. We have a collection of beautiful matte lipsticks in the Radiant Orchid shades. The blushes, eye shadows and nail colors that we launched in the collection are gorgeous. They are bright, colorful and long-lasting. We have some great gel eyeliners and pigments if you like adding a pop of color. We have a color play of lip colors that are amazing. There is something for everyone in the Radiant Orchid Pantone range.
What are some Dos & Don’ts?
• Do add a Mattifying Powder for summer. Inglot’s Mattifying Powder is made from hybrid silicon polymers made in Japan. It is very high tech and scientific formula. It was designed for excess moisture from humidity, sweating and bright hot lights of TV and film studio sets, theatre and sports players. Anytime you’ve got excess moisture on your skin brush a little bit of the Inglot Mattifying Powder across your face and it just sucks up the excess moisture. You just brush it away and it leaves this refreshed, mild mattified look that’s really awesome.
• Do wear bright bold colors. If you go for a blue lip or a bright bold purple lip do a subtler eye. If you have an intense eye do a softer lip so they don’t compete with one another.
• Do wear Bronzer. People come in and ask for a bronzer that they can wear all over their face.
• Don’t wear bronzer all over your face. That’s a no-no. When you’re thinking bronze, think sun kissed. Load up your brush with a little bronzer and smooth it across the high points of the cheek, tip of the nose, high points of the brow and across the chin. The most prominent features of your face are where the sun will kiss your face. Think sun kissed rather than all over.
Staying in step with technology and the Inglot App
People love immediacy and the Inglot App is allowing consumers to do that. If you’re in the store you can click on the app to let us know, as well as get updates on products. People like to feel connected with the brand, the product, staff and makeup artists. Makeup aficionados like to have the latest tools, products and information.
The Inglot colors are bright and bold. What’s wonderful about Inglot is that we have the incredible neutral colors for people that tend to go for those and then you have the option to select the bright bolds. We have something for everyone whether you’re into mattes, pearls, shimmers, frost, neutrals or color we make it fun for people. It’s not uncommon for people who are conservative that have only worn neutrals and after seeing our color range of products they are willing to experiment and add bright colors into their makeup routine.
Blue lipstick is a hot trend right now and it’s the attitude behind it. We’ve customarily worn only reds, pinks and corals. People say, “You can’t wear blue lipstick!” The minute you say that you can’t wear something, someone else will ask why not? As long as you have the confidence to pull it off and it is paired with the right color eye and cheek to balance it out it can look very fashionable. Makeup should be a fun thing. I was on set recently with an actress for a magazine cover who was willing to wear a blue lip. She was wearing this great blue gradient dress which I knew would look great with a blue lip. Everyone else on set was like no don’t do it, but I told them to trust that it would work. I took the blue lipstick and did an ombre on the lip so that it had a nice gradient effect which looked amazing. It all tied in so nicely. She loved it so much she purchased all of the blue lip products I used to ombre her lips.
Advice for aspiring makeup artists and those that would like a career in the beauty industry
If you have a passion for something, just do it. In terms of makeup when people start to say these are the rules and this is how it should be done is when you have to throw caution to the wind. If that was the case we wouldn’t be wearing blue lipstick now. Makeup is where you have to play with the products. We wouldn’t have the cat eyeliner or false eyelashes if someone hadn’t played around with makeup. There is a right way, a wrong way and a wrong way that becomes right because you played with the makeup and made it enjoyable. It’s important to experiment and have fun with makeup. When you experiment that is when you learn from your mistakes.
While it’s great to look at YouTube tutorials the person may say to do it one way. You may try it and learn that doing it that way didn’t compliment the face of the person you were working on. That is why you have to practice and develop your method. Do it because you want to experiment and try new things and learn different techniques. That is how you’re able to grow as a makeup artist. Watch videos, television, movies and cut pictures from magazines so that you can copy the look.
Come see us at Inglot and we’ll play in store and show you some of our products, tips and tricks to help you perfect your craft. We like to make it interesting and fun. Find ways to learn about the industry even though you may have limited funds and unable to enroll in a school. There are free online tutorials everywhere that you’re able to learn from. Knowledge is everywhere.
Ask a makeup artist that you enjoy their work if you can assist them on a photo shoot. You have to start somewhere and you can volunteer to sit with a makeup artist, even if it’s just washing brushes you can observe and learn from them on set. If you have a passion for it, do it. There are shoots going on all the time that you can intern with an artist.
