If you love a blended coffee drink you already know that they can be pretty pricey at the coffee shop. I had one made in a small town in southern Colorado to my specifications and to my shock the price came to $8.50. That’s over the top because it’s usually between $3 and $5 which is still expensive. Oh well, I was on vacation!
A blended drink is usually composed of coffee, ice and a powdered mix of some sort. I discovered that my favorite local blended drink was made using a mix from a company called “Big Train”. You can actually buy that mix online. However, during my research I uncovered some disturbing facts relating to what I was ingesting into my body.
For a serving size of 8 ounces, the Big Train mocha blended ice coffee mix has 150 calories and 5.9 grams of fat of which 100% is saturated fat. It also has 14.1 grams of sugar. The good news is there is no cholesterol but that is offset by the high fat and sugar content. Jeepers! I’m thinking I have to cut down or completely stop treating myself to this divine beverage.
Ah … but every problem has a solution. At least I like to think so! Big train also makes a product called the “Fit Frappe”. It’s actually a powdered protein mix and it comes in several flavors. My favorites are the mocha and espresso products. For a serving size of 8 ounces the mocha flavored option has 60 calories and only 1.5 grams of fat of which zero is saturated fat. It also has 10 grams of protein and has 19 vitamins and minerals. Cool!
Why don’t most coffee houses carry this? Like with most things I’m sure it comes down to money. The Big Train mocha fit frappe costs as much as 60% more than the “junky” mocha blend. The best deal is to buy the fit frappe powder and make your own superb blended drink. The powder comes in a 2.26 pound heavy duty jug. There are 38 eight ounce servings so the cost will work out to about $1.19 per drink based upon a price of $45. I reduced the cost of future purchases by saving the nice jug (and scoop) and buying the 3lb “bulk” bag of fit frappe. I pour the powder from the bag into the jug and save the excess for later. My last purchase cost me about $35 for the 3lb bag. There are 50 servings in a bulk bag so that costs out to 70 cents per serving. Thrifty!
Besides saving money and being healthier you can experiment and make the drink exactly how you love it. To me the consistency of a blended drink is of utmost importance. I want an old fashioned milkshake kind of consistency. I don’t want it to be too liquidy. Putting the powder in a shaker with some ice cubes and liquid is just not going to do the job!
I use a magic bullet with the 16 ounce cup because it is super-fast and it’s easy to blend and drink out of the same container but most any decent blender will work. My formula is one cup of liquid, ¼ cup of powder and one cup of crushed ice. Blend together until smooth and drink with a straw. I will alternate the liquid between almond milk, coconut milk and cashew milk. If you have the time and the equipment use an espresso shot as part of the liquid if you desire. You could also add powdered espresso for extra taste (as well as caffeine). I have found the Café Bustelo powdered espresso to be a good product for the price. Enjoy!
