A wraparound front porch can be a valuable extension of an adjoining living area, even if the space is narrow. As long as it is more than just a walkway, it can add significant value and curb appeal to the home. When aptly furnished, it is a wonderful place to kick back and watch the world go by. It is important to choose furnishings that fit the space instead of selecting over-sized pieces that simply catch your eye. Just because it fits does not mean that it is suitable for the space. Consider these ideas for decorating and furnishing the narrow area, and add color and design while making it look and feel far more spacious, comfortable and inviting.
Opt for Wooden Benches with Indoor/Outdoor Cushions for Comfort
Do not make the mistake of selecting over-sized chairs for a narrow porch. No matter how great they looked in the store, the space will look and feel cramped. Opt for sturdy wooden benches that have been properly treated to prevent sun and moisture damage. Before deciding that benches would not be comfortable, look for thick and comfy indoor/outdoor cushions as well. They are available in numerous sizes, colors and patterns. If you want something to lean against, add rows of indoor/outdoor throw pillows in a coordinating pattern and hue. They will fit the space perfectly while adding decorative appeal.
Add Tall Narrow Planters of Flowers and Trailing Foliage
Planters are ideal decorations for a wraparound porch, especially when they are filled with gorgeous flowers and foliage. When working with a narrow space, select tall and slender planters. Fill them with rich organic soil, and plant blooming annuals in the center. Surround the flowers with vinca vines or another small trailing variety. The tall planters will be perfect for holding flowers and vines, and they will beautifully line the narrow space without restricting the walkway. In addition, consider placing a smaller planter of the same color and design scheme in the center of a side table. It will beautifully separate the benches while providing a solid surface for holding drinks, snacks and more.
Make Good Use of the Rail
A handrail is good for more than preventing falls, especially when it is connected to a wraparound front porch. It makes a phenomenal support for wrought iron planters. Look for the long narrow window box variety, and attach coordinating rail hooks. Line the boxes with shredded coconut husk, and fill them with organic soil, vibrant flowers and vines that will trail down the balusters. What was once just a narrow wraparound porch on the front of the house will become a showplace and an inviting space for relaxing and conversing with family, neighbors and friends.
