I’m always on the hunt for healthy, natural beauty and personal care products. While making my monthly order for dog medicine at an online drugstore, I decided to wander into the beauty and health care section for myself.
I found Nature’s Gate Organics Herbal Blend Deodorant (Chamomile & Lemon Verbena scent), an aluminum-free deodorant promising “effective protection” without any gross ingredients including propylene glycol (it’s used to make antifreeze for your car), cancer-causing parabens and aluminum chlorohydrate.
Why Go Aluminum-Free
Almost five years ago, I learned about aluminum-free personal care and beauty products such as deodorant, lotion and makeup from an oncologist at the local cancer center. She recommended anyone undergoing radiation treatments should avoid aluminum-containing products because they can lead to skin burns.
Then I learned aluminum is toxic to the body and may be a catalyst for disease and severe health conditions. According to the National Cancer Institute aluminum found in deodorants and antiperspirants can plug sweat ducts, causing the skin near breast tissue to absorb the metal and cause hormonal estrogen effects.
“Because estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer,” the NCI states on its website.
How the Deodorant Works
So, it was time to give aluminum-free deodorant a try. The Nature’s Gate Organics Herbal Blend Deodorant went on smooth and easy without any caking or streaking on dark clothing. Bonus! It feels light, fresh and barely there unlike some heavy deodorants with a creamy or gel texture. And, the number one benefit: it reduces odor.
What it Doesn’t Do
So, how does this deodorant differ–other than the ingredient list–from what you’re using now? Well, it works differently. Most people use deodorant to feel fresh, stay dry and reduce natural body odors. Aluminum-free deodorant does all of that, except prevent wetness.
When using aluminum-free deodorant and you expect to sweat, wear absorbent cotton clothing. Re-apply the deodorant for odor control just before exercise or strenuous activities. Or, use an anti-perspirant to keep moisture under control.
