Finding auto insurance that fits your needs doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. In fact, my plan used to cost hundreds of dollars every month, but it now costs nowhere near what I used to pay.
Cutting my monthly bill by a large amount wasn’t incredibly difficult. It was just a matter of being a smart shopper and knowing what questions to ask.
Below I’ll outline the process I used for getting a much, much better rate for my auto insurance than the hundreds I used to shell out month after month.
Figure out what you really need
I used to have an incredibly comprehensive auto insurance plan on one of my family’s cars, which is what some people call a “beater.” My wife and I also have a new Volkswagen Jetta, but our family’s other car is nowhere near as fancy — or worth as much — as the Jetta. We’ve had a few different vehicles in my family over the years, but the Jetta and the “beater” are our main two at the moment.
Once I thought about how much the beater actually was worth and crunched some numbers, I realized it was totally not worth having the comprehensive, cover-everything insurance policy on it. Sure, we still have this type of policy for the Jetta, but there was absolutely no reason to keep this for my beater car. Just figuring this out and deciding to only keep the bare essentials cut out a substantial amount of my bill.
Ask your agent for discounts
There are so many discounts that I never even considered before I started really seriously trying to find a much better rate for my auto insurance. I found some discounts online, but I had a feeling that there may have been some that I overlooked. I thank God that I had this feeling. All it took was a matter of minutes to schedule a quick meeting with a local representative for my auto insurance.
The agent plugged me in to so many awesome discounts and deals that I may have otherwise missed. For example, I get the “good student discount” now. I take some classes on this side just for fun, but the agent found a way to make this be good enough to count. He also set me up to save even more money by paying online. In hindsight, these discounts seem so simple, but I never would have realized I could get them! I wish I would have taken the time to meet with an agent much sooner!
When I really got really serious about getting a better rate on my auto insurance, I shopped around like a madman. I looked at about a million auto insurance websites and called countless online agents. It was a tiring process, but it ultimately led to me finding the perfect policy for me needs. By spending the time to look over countless options, I was able to find a steal of a deal. All it took was a little time and dedication on my part.
Even if you think you already have a good deal on your insurance, it’s worth following my process and seeing if you can get an even better rate. Just remember- when it comes to saving money, there is no such thing as a stupid question! It definitely doesn’t hurt to ask.
