Wouldn’t it be fabulous to wake up and find you’ve got long, silky eyelashes like some of your favorite celebrities? If this is a goal of yours but mascara isn’t cutting it, you could indulge in eyelash extensions. Eyelash extension or pieces are different than regular full-sized lashes that you attach to the eyelid. As a makeup artist, I frequently use mink or silk single eyelash extensions on my brides or anyone who wants extra length. You can wear these beauties for weeks or months at a time.
Some of my colleagues charge big bucks to apply these semi-permanent solutions to your eyes but truthfully, you can do them yourself at home. The only down side is the learning curve. It can take a few tries to master it but it is worth it.
Prepare for Application
Prepare for this beauty treatment by gathering all your supplies. You need a pack of eyelashes, eyelash glue (if they are not self-adhesive), aluminum foil, scissors, tweezers and cotton swabs. You also need a magnifying mirror for a precise application.
Clean your eyes and pat the skin dry. The eyelash adhesive won’t stick to the eyelid if there is makeup or oil present. Now, remove the eyelashes from the box using a pair of tweezers.
Trim the length of the eyelash pieces with scissors to get the length you want. I recommend that you trim lashes to close to your actual lash length, only slightly longer. Now if you want drama, keep them uncut.
Applying the Eyelashes
Squirt a small amount of lash glue on to a piece of aluminum foil or a small, disposable plate. Stir up the glue with a toothpick, just to get it tacky. Pick up the lash with your tweezers and dip the eyelash roots in the glue. You need a thin layer of glue on the lashes but you don’t want it to look lumpy.
Stand in front of a mirror and get ready to apply them. I recommend that you start at the center of the eye and then work outward. Achieve a natural look by keeping the extensions clustered in your actual lashes. Using the tweezers, close your eye and place the lash on your lash line. Do not touch the lash to your skin, but in the lashline.
With the lash glued in place hold it for a few seconds using a cotton swab. Wait for the glue to dry for a whole minute. Now, blink your eyes to make sure it is firmly in place.
Now you can apply mascara if you like, but if you choose to use mascara, you need to choose a water-based product. Use eyeliner to fill in any gaps.
When it comes to cleaning, use cool water but do not use oil-based eye makeup removers. Let your lashes dry naturally. This will let them last much longer, you can reuse them over and over again.
What You Should Know About Eyelash Pieces
Once you apply falsies, you have to skip the shower for 24 hours. It takes that long for the glue to set. I know I’ve told you previously not to sleep in your makeup (and you shouldn’t) but you can leave the extensions in place without any problems.
