You may have the degree, the qualifications, and the work ethic that will impress any employer. This is great to have, but until you get your foot in the door these mean nothing. You need to first prove yourself with a first impression to gain employment.
My current job, I was hired mainly because I managed to succeed where that job applicant failed. Now on the opposite side of things, with the duty to hire new people, here is what you should do when applying to jobs you find on Craigslist.
Follow All Directions
If the post says to post your resume and cover letter in the bottom of the email, do it. Attachments go unopened because of potential viruses and because it’s a waste of time to open and save each. Many jobs receive a hundred applicants in the first few hours and by not following the basic directions you quickly eliminate any chance you have at getting hired.
Include a Quick Note
Never send your resume and cover letter without adding a quick note to your application. Something as basic as saying you are applying to the job on Craigslist and what you hope to gain from the job is perfect. Keep it at a short length and get straight to the point. Don’t plead or try to get the person hiring you to feel pity. The company is hiring new people because they want someone who works hard, not a person who is good at gaining sympathy.
Edit Your Inquiry
Make sure your resume, cover letter, and note are edited thoroughly. There is no need to use fancy words either unless you are applying for a job that specifically would require it. Chances are the first look at what you send in will be quickly scanned with eyes. Use simple words. This will help get more words read and your message across.
Leave Yourself a Little Mysterious
There is no reason for your life story to appear in the first inquiry. In fact, there is no reason for your life story to ever come out to your coworkers. Many people believe this immediate openness can be seen by some as honesty. However, it comes off as pushy. Your real goal when contacting a future employer should be to come off as a charming robot. Remain very strict and simple while still letting them know you have the right personality for the job.
