Who says you have to buy items brand new, right off the shelf. I am the type of person who loves old things, and antique looks. These items are made to last and can really look great in your home. Not just furniture, but even replacing broken items with salvaged goods. This means that a junk yard trip may be in your future and it will save you a lot of money. Some ideas below are for both the house and for some of the furniture you will want to remake in the house.
Reupholster old furniture
If you have some old seating that needs to be fixed up, it can be as simple as sanding down the furniture and replacing the cushion. Try finding fabric or material that you already have lying around the house to use to fix these items. For example if you have some dinning room tables that need to be fixed up than you can use some old pillows to add the cushion. It’s amazing what you can do with some old pillows and some old chairs. This is an opportunity to really use your creativity and imagination.
Old Doors Made New
I love old doors that have been rehabbed and added to the home. Since I really enjoy Victorian or colonial era homes, and the doors, I would love to be able to fix up those doors and still use them. They just don’t make doors like these anymore. They are made of pure wood, they are heavy and strong. With a little bit of sanding, and some finishing paint you can make any old door look like new. One thing I have learned over the years is that if you know an old home is going to be knocked down, you can ask the homeowner if you can have the doors. If you decide to do this make sure that you have a termite inspection done on the door. The last thing you want is to bring bugs into your new home.
Decorate with rocks
You can also decorate your home with rocks that you may have found on the property. It may sound like a different way to repair an old home, but there are many ways you can use rocks in the home. Rocks can be used as a decorative piece in some aspect of the home. You can also use the walkway in front of the home to use the rocks. Clean up the rocks in a simple bucket of water. Just rinse the rocks off and place them where it may look best.
Reuse old kitchen cabinets
If you decide your kitchen cabinets need to be upgraded and remodeled. If the cabinets are still in good shape, than you can reuse them as cabinets in the house. For example you could mount one of the cabinets into the bathroom. And use this as an extra storage space for your bathroom. Just make sure when the cabinets are being removed from the wall that it is done in a way that keeps them in good shape so they can be reused.
