When you first thought of homeschooling you probably tried to think of creative ways to make homeschooling fun. One thing I have learned about homeschooling is the importance of making sure you pace yourself. This can be done by making a yearly homeschool plan. A yearly homeschool plan is something that is done at the beginning of each school year. Some homeschoolers teach year round and others, start towards the end of summer. No matter when you start, it is best to plan out the year in the way that is best for you. Below are five steps that will help you to make sure the year is paced just right.
Start by putting together your curriculum list. This can vary depending on your state requirements. You can usually find a curriculum online. Print out a copy of the full year’s curriculum based on your child’s age. The curriculum list will tell you what needs to be covered in each subject.
School year start and end date
The next thing you will want to decide is when you want your school year to start, and when you want it to end. Use a calendar that can be hung up in an area for the whole family to see. This way everyone will know when school starts and ends. If you decide to homeschool year round then you will want to mark the days you will start each grade level. For example, if your child will be going from third to fourth grade, mark down when you will be starting, and stopping each.
Break in Quarters
Next, break the years into quarters. Four quarters usually works best for a typical school year. Although this may not work for everyone. Decide how many weeks you would like in each quarter. Be sure to take into account any vacations, or holiday breaks you plan to take during the year.
Next take one subject at a time, and see what information you will need to cover. Then decide in which quarter you will cover each topic. Some subjects may need more time. For example, with math you may need a few extra weeks to cover multiplication facts. I have always found it best to give myself a nice buffer of an extra week. This is just so I can make sure that they have really learned the information.
How many hours a day
You will also need to decide how many hours a day you want to spend on school each day. Our school day usually lasts for about four hours. We have found this works best for our family. We are able to get a good amount of work done each day, and still end our school year on time. Decide how many hours will work best for your family each day. It may take a little bit of trial and error to figure this out.
