Depression is a condition in which a person has a feeling of sadness for a certain period of time, whether short term or long term. It can drain their hope, drive, and energy, making it difficult for them to not do what it takes to feel better. They feel hopeless, worthless, or even guilty. There is an increase in sleeping because of the lack of energy. They have difficulty concentrating, remembering details, they overeat ,or either lose their appetite. Some experience cramps, digestive problems, and they lose interest in activities.
Depression robs people of their ability to enjoy life. They feel run down and find it impossible to take part in any of life’s activities. Even interacting with friends and families can be a challenge and overwhelming because of the feeling of emptiness.
It may take time to feel better but if you make positive choices, you can quickly overcome depression. The following are some suggestions that will help you overcome depression:
It is important to have a close relationship with family and friends because they are a great support system. You will find that the feeling of isolation will subside because you are able to share your thoughts and feelings. You can also involve yourself with activities with them, such as going to the movies, shopping, or even eating out. Being around other people, will help you feel less depressed.
Be more aware of what you are thinking. When you are thinking positive, it is hard for negative thoughts to enter your mind. Just tell yourself that even if the situation is bad, you will get through it. Keep in mind that thinking positive has to be on a persistent and daily basis, and it does take work. Even if a person that is close to you hurt you, don’t dwell on that. Think about the other people in your life that genuinely love you and have been there for you.
Exercise at least 30 minutes to an hour a day. Exercise helps to relieve stress and it increases your heart rate. It will definitely help keep your mind off of the negative things going on in your life. Walking, running, or jogging works wonders.
Get Plenty of Sleep
You may want to try and go to bed early to ensure that you get a good night’s rest. When resting, you should turn off the lights and try and go to bed at the same time every night. Before bed, try and avoid caffeine. Getting plenty of sleep helps to relieve stress. It is healthy for the mind and body.
Be thankful for the little things. It may be helpful to write down the things that you are grateful for on a daily basis. Even if it seems like everything is going wrong in your life, just keep in mind that there are things that you can still be thankful for. Even if it is just being grateful for having food. Always keep in mind that there are people in the world who are going through worse things.
