We invest a lot of money in makeup and time, too, and want our looks to last all day. When I go to work in the morning, I want my makeup to look as fresh and wonderful when I get home at night whenever possible. For some of us, our makeup has to last from a work day into a night out and stay flawless. So how do you maximize your makeup look? As a beauty expert, here’s my guide on how to get the most out of your look.
Buy Long Lasting Product
It should be a no brainer, but longer lasting products tend to last longer without any assistance. With foundation, opt for a 24 hour or 12 hour formula that will get you through at least most of your day. My favorite long wearing foundation is Maybelline SuperStay Makeup, which really does last about a day. For mascara, I opt for a waterproof one which tends to last much longer than regular mascara. Be sure to comb through with a lash brush when wet to help eliminate clumps to begin with. Try the Lash Power Long Lasting Mascara by Clinique which provides excellent coverage and wears all day.
Eyeliner can be a tricky product to get to last throughout the day. I have found, again, that waterproof varieties tend to have the longest wear. Be sure not to touch your eyes as much as possible to avoid smudges and allow it to dry completely before opening your eye. Try the Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner by Bobbi Brown which comes in tons of colors for an all day look. For excellent lip color, check out Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick for saturated color that won’t rub off on your cups.
Buy a Booster
To make your product you already have last longer, add a booster to help keep the product on longer. You’ll notice I didn’t mention a long wearing eye shadow. That is because even long wearing eye shadow can come off very easily. Try a primer, like Urban Decay Primer Potion, to help lock on the color for all day wear. If I need eye shadow to last, there is absolutely no skipping primer. In a pinch, you can use a bit of concealer or foundation as a base for the eye shadow. There are even mascara primers, which can help lock on your mascara too, like e.l.f. Studio Mascara primer. You can also sweep this over your brows if you wear brow filler.
To boost the life of your foundation, blush and concealer, a priming lotion or gel can help it last all day. My favorite is Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, which is not sticky or heavy and helps my makeup stay on my face. You can also buy a BB cream or foundation that contains primer to skip the extra step. You can also sweep a finishing powder, like NYX HD Studio Finishing Powder which keeps your makeup protected from the elements and gives a matte look to your skin.
For your lips, a lip primer is a great way to get your product to last longer. Too Face’s Lip Insurance Primer helps your lipstick or lip gloss stay on better throughout the day. This one also helps prevent bleeding onto your face, which can happen with saturated colors. I find that this helps me get the true color of my lipstick to show through and it doesn’t come off on my morning coffee cup.
Making sure your skin is well hydrated can also help your makeup last longer. I recommend a light moisturizer for morning use, and slathering on a night cream to help repair your face at night. Making sure you exfoliate your skin weekly can also help your makeup stick to your skin, not to your dry patches. With great products and a little practice, you can make your makeup last until you hit the pillow. Just make sure you wash it off before you fall asleep.
