Countless glass jars are thrown away or recycled on a daily basis, but they can also be reused in practical and decorative new ways. They can be transformed into sparkling votive candle holders that are perfect for weddings, parties, home decorating and more. The finished luminaries can also be embellished to coordinate with specific colors, and they can be personalized to create amazing decorative appeal. Use these easy instructions and embellishment ideas, and transform something that would have been discarded into gorgeous decor for wedding reception tables, kitchen counters, windowsills and more.
To make sparkling votive candle holders you will need clear pint-size glass jars, water-soluble craft glue, water and fine glitter in a color of your choice. Silver is ideal. When touched by the light of a battery-operated candle, it will sparkle and shine unlike any other hue. You will also need a paintbrush, a craft stick and a small bowl for combining the glue and water.
Begin by squeezing about two tablespoons of craft glue into a bowl. Add a few drops of water to thin out the glue. Stir the mixture with a wooden craft stick. If the glue begins to thicken during the application process, add a few more drops of water. It will be easier to apply, and it will not affect the adhesive property of the glue.
Immediately begin brushing the glue onto the inside of the jars. Completely cover the bottom and the sides. Apply it as high as you prefer, and as evenly as possible. For added drama, apply the glue three-fourths of the way up the sides. Flickering battery-operated candles will be just out of sight when the holders are viewed from the sides, and the sparkling glass will look gorgeous.
Before the glue has a chance to dry, pour a generous amount of glitter inside the jar. Turn it around and around until all of the glue-coated surfaces are covered with sparkling glitter. Lightly tap the jar against your hand while rotating it. Pour out the extra glitter to use on subsequent jars. Let the holders dry for at least 24 hours before adding battery-operated candles.
If you want to add glitz that will coordinate with a specific color scheme, look for cut crystals. They are available in craft stores and online. Buy the peel and stick variety, or plan on attaching the gems with super glue or E6000 adhesive. Evenly space the gems around the neck of the jar or add an initial in the center. Use stencils of your choice to create perfect designs. Whether adding gems or not, your sparkling votive candles and holders will look absolutely amazing.
