Orchids are beautiful on their own and birdcages draw the eye in for a peek. Combine the two interesting objects and you’ll have a WOW factor right in your living room. Orchids look delicate and fragile, but are actually hardy plants that are easy to grow, even inside a birdcage.
* 3 – 5 potted orchids of varying heights
* Medium birdcage
* Moss (available at any garden supply center or home improvement store)
** Choose a rounded-top birdcage with a bottom about the size of a pizza pan for this project.Select orchids that are shorter than the cage so the blooms will all be inside the birdcage. Selecting two tall orchids, two short orchids and one of middle height will fill up the cage.
Placing the Orchids
Remove the top of the birdcage from its base. Place potted orchids on the base with tallest ones in the middle and shorter one around the perimeter if is will be seen from all sides in the room. If the birdcage will be displayed from one side of the room, place the tallest orchids on one side of the base and shorter ones in front of them.
This is the trick that will make it look like the orchids are growing in the birdcage. Wet small handfuls of moss and place it around all the pots to camouflage them. Cover the exposed bottom of the cage and place moss on top of potting soil in pots also.
Replace and Placement
Carefully replace top of birdcage, threading a couple of stem through the bars of the cage. Use a chopstick or skewer to arrange moss to cover cage bottom if needed. Place birdcage orchid in a bright location, but not in direct sunlight and away from the draft or heating/cooling vents and exterior doors.
Use a small watering can with a long, narrow spout to reach in between the birdcage bars and water orchids and moss when they become dry to the touch. Misting with water will also work, just be careful not to over-water orchids. Apply a water soluble fertilize once a year just before flower buds open.
Remove cage top and cut down flower spike after the orchid has finished blooming for the year. Continue to care for the plant as usual all year and it will reward you with another spectacular bloom display next year.
