You don’t have to be famous to become a Twitter Celebrity. Many people work 9-5 jobs and still somehow manage to have more followers than people you have met in your entire life. How can someone with seemingly no leverage in the entertainment industry go from 0 followers to thousands of them?
Say Something Unique
Unlike high school, you have to say something unique in order to become popular on Twitter. Be funny, be clever, and be different. Repeating ideas other people have had makes you a parrot, not someone anyone wants to follow on Twitter.
Find a Niche
One of the best ways to build a Twitter following is to find your niche. This may be talking about sports, being a parent, or anything else focused mostly on one topic. You can even make it more specialized, only offering news on a particular celebrity. Of course, don’t say anything you might regret as the Internet has a way of figuring out who you are, even if you are masquerading as a fake celebrity.
Follow Others First
Most people on Twitter are not going out of their way to find new people to follow. If you do the searching first you can find a few people to follow which will lead to many following you back. This is the basis of social networking. You will follow their followers and those followers will follow you. Everyone begins following each other until you get into a big circle of your tweets actually getting some views.
Retweet and Favorite
Let people know you are actually reading what they say on Twitter. Retweeting and clicking the favorite button on other posts is the Twitter equivalent of Facebook liking. You should never overdue it though as this can get annoying to your followers; creepy too.
Have a Conversation
Twitter offers you the chance to respond to a tweet, something you should do often. Engage others in a conversation. This is more direct than clicking the retweet or favorite button and allows for a more personal relationship with those you follow. People love to be acknowledged. Adding your two cents into the conversation every once in a while to a variety of people can also get your Twitter handle out there in addition to letting them know you care.
Let Your Twitter Go Public
Never hesitate to let people know you are on Twitter, unless you are saying things you would rather they not see. Many of your other social networking friends may have a Twitter account without the knowledge that you do too. In certain terms it is still a younger website and one more difficult to find people you already know on. Publicize it wherever you can. There are of course limits to this, but until you reach the pinnacle you have work to do.
