Lockbox heroes are a special type of hero in Marvel: Avengers Alliance that you can only get by opening up lockboxes. To acquire a lockbox hero, you must open these boxes until you find at least one each of eight unique comic book covers. Opened individually, each lockbox has a 7% chance of giving you a cover. If you open ten at a time, you always get exactly one cover, though it won’t necessarily be unique. You have to open at least one more set of boxes than unique covers you have found in order to assure that you get a unique cover and the number you have to open resets whenever you find a unique cover. Overall, this means it is possible, if incredibly unlikely to open as few as eight lockboxes or as many as 360 to get the hero. The following guide will teach you tricks on how to maximize your chances to get any given lockbox hero in Marvel: Avengers Alliance.
Boxes are Unique – The comic book covers for a specific hero can only be found in specific boxes. Thus, if you are trying to get Dr. Doom for example, only Impending Lockboxes will open covers that unlock him. Don’t waste your time trying to get lockboxes for a hero you have already acquired.
PvP Lockboxes – Lockbox heroes are always released either in conjunction with a PvP season or with a group boss. When released with a PvP season, you can earn at least five lockboxes each day by winning PvP battles. If you lose battles, that doesn’t matter. The game will continue to give you one free lockbox each time you win, until you win five times, no matter how many times you fight. Also, when you win, you get a roulette spin that can give you two, five, or ten boxes. Make sure to win five battles every single day of PvP, which normally lasts for 26 days.
Group Boss Lockboxes – Group bosses are almost always released in conjunction with a special operation and usually are unlocked as soon as you complete the first research task. This means you should go out of your way to complete the first few tasks quickly and start the research. Then unlock the boss as soon as you complete the research. Each group boss is worth 10 lockboxes if you defeat it and you can re-spawn the group boss every three days. Over an average length special operation, you should be able to fight a group boss at least nine times.
Group Bosses and Friends – The more friends you have, the more lockboxes you can earn. Every time you fight the group boss of a friend, you will earn one lockbox when that group boss is defeated. Also, friends can fight your group boss to save you U-ISO costs. Even if your friends defeat your boss, you get your normal 10 box reward. Furthermore, if you happen to reduce a friend’s group boss to 0 health, you get an extra reward of one, three, or five boxes. You get this reward for reducing your own group boss to 0 health as well.
Tasks – The vast majority of lockbox heroes have tasks associated with them. These tasks will usually earn you roughly 40 more lockboxes. You should start completing these tasks as soon as you are capable so you don’t miss any of the freebies.
Roulettes – In addition to the PvP roulette that you can earn every day, special operations usually have roulettes that drop lockboxes. This means you will have to fight a lot of special operation bosses. Try to figure out which of the three missions is the easiest for you and complete that mission as often as possible once you have completed all the tasks of the special operation. This costs U-ISO, but if you got lucky and hit the 1,000 U-ISO reward on any day then it won’t be a problem. Some special operations drop the lockboxes in deployment rewards instead. This is even easier. Start a mission, deploy any heroes you can, fight one battle, get the rewards, and then reset the mission.
Always Open 10 Boxes – Mathematically, it is always optimal to open 10 boxes at a time. This assures that you get at least one cover and will assure a unique cover every so often. You may be tempted to open singletons after the boxes stop dropping, but that is never a good idea. It is better to spend gold to buy a few extra lockboxes and open 10 or to patiently wait until a special even comes along when old boxes are dropped.
Open Immediately – There is absolutely no benefit to waiting to open your boxes. Open your lockboxes as soon as you get a set of ten. If you get lucky, you might even get a reward from a box that will help you some other way. If you get incredibly lucky, you might get all eight unique covers from just 80 boxes. This saves you a lot of effort if you know you’ve already completed the exercise.
Gold – You can buy one lockbox for the cost of one gold at any time. Never do this until the lockboxes are about to expire. When they are about to expire, lockboxes go on sale, up to 20% off. It is better to save gold by buying on sale than to get the hero earlier at a higher cost.
