Thanks to the direct publishing platforms offered by Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, and others anybody can write and publish the novel they’ve been dreaming about. There are no publishing gatekeepers or hoops to jump through to see your book in print. Unfortunately, there’s also no big time marketing budget like you might see if you went the traditional route.
If you’ve ever loved a book written by an indie author and wondered what you can do to help them out, the good news is that there are a lot of things you can do. And they are easier than you might think.
Tell the World
Word of mouth is the best way to spread the love. Think of all the times you’ve bought something based on a rave review from a friend. Write a blog post, send a Tweet, or literally use your mouth to let the world know about this awesome new book you read.
Write a Review
If you loved the book, leave a review on Amazon and other sites where people often look for feedback on books. Letting people know what you thought of the book is a great way to help your new favorite author find a wider audience.
Offer a Guest Post
If you notice that your indie author friend does guest posts on blogs, shoot them an email and invite them to have a go on your blog. Not all authors have time for this because they might be writing in their free time around a full time job, so don’t be offended if the author can’t make an appearance. A lot of authors will be flattered by the invitation and will be happy for the opportunity.
To help ensure that they will be able to find time to write a guest post, ask them what sort of post they’d like to do. Coming up with an original post might be too time consuming, but an interview might be just the ticket.
Buy More Indie Published Books
Indie authors aren’t really in competition with each other. It’s more a matter of removing the stigma that exists against self publishing. When you buy indie books, you are helping to break down the idea that all indie books are of lesser quality than traditionally published books.
It’s true that by letting anyone publish whatever they want has dramatically increased the number of books that aren’t very well written or edited, but it’s false to assume that just because a book is self published that it is automatically of inferior quality. There are some really amazing books that have been picked up by major publishing houses that started out as $.99 indie published books.
Give the Book as a Gift
Buying more copies of the book you loved puts money in the pocket of the author, which is beneficial because it helps to enable to them to write more. It also increases their ranking on the book seller’s lists. Higher rankings mean more exposure for the author and the potential for more sales.
It also gives the recipient of the gift the opportunity to discover a new favorite author and start working their way through this list, as well.
