When I first started working in a pharmacy, the excitement of having such an important job was overwhelming… at first. A few weeks into the job, I was overwhelmed for only negative reasons. The job requires constant working and dealing with a lot of people. I almost quit several times until I decided to make a change and try to find the positives. There will always be bad days, but there are ways to get yourself through it without going home and crying about it!
Make Small Talk With Customers
Getting to know the people you deal with on a daily basis is a really good thing. They will respect you more if you seem genuinely interested in them, and they are less likely to freak out over mistakes you make if you are gentle and respectful towards them.
Laugh Off The Negative Attitudes
When someone’s insurance isn’t quite cooperating, or the doctor hasn’t faxed in something a customer needs, there is a good chance that said customer is going to get irritated, even furious and yell at you. Don’t take it personally. Of course, getting yelled at stings a little, but try not to take it home with you. Instead, laugh it off and look at it from their point of view. It’s a little more fair to them, yes, but that is just part of the job.
Another tip when someone gets mad, is to not yell or fight back with them. For people like me, that’s very hard to do, but it only makes the situation work. Instead, calmly explain to them how the pharmacy team plans on fixing the problem and assure them that you will try your best.
Feel Proud Of Your Hard Work.
A day’s work at any pharmacy is not easy. Instead of feeling helpless, feel proud of the fact that you are working hard and helping people to overcome their sicknesses. The fact that you know so much about different drugs and medications is pretty important, too. Give yourself a mental high-five every time someone asks you about something and you know the answer!
Don’t Think About It When You Get Home
Whatever bad experience you had at work, vent about it a little bit, and then let it go. Don’t let the stress of the job overcome your life, or you will find yourself in tears instead of sleeping. Take it from someone who couldn’t grasp this concept at first!
Smile Like You Mean It
The last. but certainly not least tip that I have is to just SMILE. Having a good attitude will rub off on co-workers and customers alike. Good attitudes will help the pharmacy team work together better, and that is really important!
