My husband is a huge Baltimore Orioles fan. I grew up not playing baseball and never going to the games. Marrying someone who loved sports, I dedicated myself to learning how to enjoy sports games. Knowing every rule of the game is not a requirement to have fun. Understanding a few basic rules can go a long way. Even if you don’t care much about keeping up with how the game is going, you can easily learn a few conversation topics to discuss while watching a baseball game.
Conversation Topics: Field Size
Did you know that not all baseball fields have the same field size? If you scored tickets to a game and want to impress your date, research the ball field dimensions compared to other ball fields. Because field sizes are different, a player may actually perform better or worse, depending on the field that they are playing in for the game. Many MLB parks actually have different shapes as well as sizes. Simply making a comment about how big or small the ball field looks in comparison to another ball field you’ve been in can show your date that you care about the game.
Conversation Topics: Baseball News
Check out trending news articles about baseball. For instance, the press recently named a child, Austin Chaney, ‘Foul Ball Kid’ for handing a foul ball that he caught to another fan, a pretty young woman, at a Texas Rangers game. Finding a baseball news story that interests you is more important than reading up on every news story out there. After doing your research and finding a story that is inspiring to you, share with your date how the story has changed your perspective about how awesome baseball is. Regarding the ‘Foul Ball Kid’ story, mention how you love that baseball brings people closer together. Give a subtle hint that maybe your date can catch a foul ball for you.
Enjoy The Festivities: Eating Great Food
One of the best parts of a good baseball game would be partaking in delicious hot dogs and other treats from the concession stands. Don’t skip the food. A baseball game is not the right time to be the girl on a diet. Your date wants to have fun and splurge for processed, loaded hot dogs with you, so dive right on in and enjoy the food. If you feel guilty, you could always suggest a walk around town to end your date.
