Emma Frost is one of those PvP heroes in Marvel: Avengers Alliance that will just make you hate the random number generator. When luck is on her side, it can be nearly impossible to defeat her. And even when it isn’t, she can completely throw off your game plan with just a single power. If, like many players in the game, you are losing to her more often than you are winning, the following strategy guide will teach you how to defeat Emma Frost in PvP in Marvel: Avengers Alliance.
Phoenix Five – Almost every single Emma Frost running around in PvP is wearing the Phoenix Five variant uniform. This uniform has a chance of granting Cosmic Power to any ally at the start of that ally’s turn. Cosmic Power massively increases the stats of that ally and removes nearly all debuffs, including stun. Consequently, debuffs are generally ineffective against Emma Frost and her team, especially since she also has a quick action power that applies this effect, and stun powers definitely aren’t worth your time. Stun powers usually have high stamina cost, less than a perfect chance to stun, and deal lower than normal damage. This is a terrible deal if there is a chance of the stun being randomly removed without any effect. Because of the timing of this special ability, you can’t stop it, the only really good counter is to minimize the effect of it by using few negative status effects and keeping your heroes well healed.
Diamond Body – Adding to the difficulty of dealing with Emma Frost, she has a chance of massively reducing the damage from any attack that hits her. The damage is reduced by approximately 90%, making most attacks nearly inconsequential. Normally this can only kick in once per round, but with the Eternal E-ISO, she can use this effect multiple times per round. Check her info and see if she has the Diamonds are Forever special ability to know whether or not she has this ISO equipped. If she doesn’t, never use a massive damage attack against her that has a cooldown unless she has the organic recovery status effect. If she does have this special ability, don’t bother attacking her until all other foes are defeated. She will simply prevent too much damage, which will slow you down too much to win.
Psychic Tap – This woman is really the master of delay. In addition to her Diamond Body special ability, her Psychic Tap power also slows you down. It is essentially a partial stun. A hero affected by it will take approximately 40% of health as damage if that ally makes an attack. Any non-quick action other than an attack will end this effect. Pay very close attention to this. It is easy to forget that an ally is affected by this attack, make an attack, and then watch that hero die from the resulting damage. Like a stun, this will completely throw off the timing of your battle when she starts using it regularly. The round after you clear it by taking a non-attack action, that hero is immune to the effect, but if you remove it with status effect removal, the hero doesn’t gain that immunity. Take advantage of that immunity when you can. Since the only real defense against this is awareness, pay very close attention to what is happening in battles against Frost.
Healing – In addition to all of the above, Emma Frost has a very high damage psychic attack called Mental Trauma. Because it is psychic the attack ignores shields and avoidance effects. And while Emma is boosted by Cosmic Power or Unlock Potential, the damage is roughly 40% of an ally’s health and the attack hits your entire team. In short, this means that she can tear through the health of your team and there is basically nothing you can do to stop it. Her various stalling abilities makes it nearly impossible to defeat her quickly. Thus, the best counter to Emma is lots of healing. In many PvP battles you can afford to ignore healing and simply focus on damage. Not here. Make sure your team is constantly topped off on health if at all possible. Shields are worthless against her, but should defend you against the rest of her team, so they tend to be important as well.
Magneto / Juggernaut – If she is constantly a thorn in your side, and you happen to own either of them, Magneto and Juggernaut are her natural predators, because they are immune to psychic attacks. Magneto is the superior choice against her, but both will work. Phoenix is a less effective, but reasonable alternative, though you want one of her alternate class uniforms if you use her, since Emma is almost always a tactician.
